Terrain Display On Nd

Featured Replies

Hi

When is best to use the Terrain showing on ND ? Or does it depend on your flight.

I've noticed you can't have both Terrain & WX showing on ND at sametime.

According to the FCOM normal procedures the only place it mention is during the before takeoff flow and only if needed; such as in a mountainous terrain.

You probably should use it on approach if also into a mountainous terrain.  Of course you don't need terrain on at FL340 but the WX radar would be more useful at that point.

In the end its up to the PIC to decide when to use it.

I keep it on all the time. Now that weather radar is available, I put terrain on one display and WXR on the other; the one in front of me depends on current conditions.

Some airline SOPs have one pilot have WX and the other TERR.  It's all by SOP.

If you get into trouble with terrain, the plane will override the display settings and make the terrain really obvious to you on the display.
