Magnificent Lake Tahoe...

Featured Replies

Lake Tahoe is another magnificent airport from Orbyx.  I purchased and installed it this morning.  The casinos at South Lake Tahoe are well depicted as is the shoreline of the lake.  One of my favorite seaplane bases (from when I used to fly floats back in the 50s) is Homewood. And when I click on GO TO AIRPORT and enter Homewood (T38) it parks my aircraft right at the dock.  Great Job Guys!

The tires are worn.  The shocks are shot.  The steering is wobbly.  But the engine still runs fine.

I saw some screenshots of it over at the ORBX forums.  They never fail to impress that's for sure.  Looks like by Christmas I may be in the market for a bigger SSD drive!

I have a 500GB SSD Chris.  It holds my operating system (Windows 7), and both my FS2004 and FSX instalations.  I still have 284GB of fress space left.

Now I do not have Global or Vector or any mesh installed but I have every FSX North American region installed along with all the Orbx payware and freeware airports.  It only eats up 89.5GB after installing Tahoe.

Monterey to Anchorage along with Orbx Rocky Mountain regions gives me plenty of flyling room without the need for Global, Vector or addon mesh.

I also have FSAddon's Vancouver and Tongass Fjords, Ultimate Traffic 2, and a few WOAI traffic files for the region..

I feel I still have plenty of room for anymore North American Orbx products coming up in the future.

With the SSD I'm up and ready to fly in 75 seconds.  Even over the city of San Francisco (KSFO) my framerates almost never drop below 18 and are usually in the high 20s (I have my framerates limited to 30.

I've got flashing runway textures with KVTL.

I just took off and landed from both ends of the runway at KTVL and experienced no flashing at all Wayne.

Well,

I am a big fan of orbx but their latest, Lake Tahoe, cannot impress me. In fact, after instaling today I removed it again from my harddisk. I just don't like the colours used and they don't blend in very well with the surrounding hills and mountains.

As long as orbx concentrated themselves on airports and the immediate surroundings, they did a great job. Now I find them trying too much too hard.

No I don't like Lake Tahoe one bit.

What are they saying about Lake Tahoe on the official Orbx forum?  I am a banned lifer so I cannot go there myself.

Heya Noel,

Well, the usual superlatives! I myself have spent a LOT of time at SLT, and I am impressed with the detail. For instance, you can see the Heavenly Valley ski area parking lot at the bottom of Gun Barrel (a notoriously difficult mogul run straight down the mountain), as well as the hotel at the bottom of Ski Run Blvd. The casinos are very well done, and the recent burn area (some asshat threw a cigarette butt from the Gondola Chair) is well modelled. The Ridge Hotel at the top of Kingsbury Grade is well done as well.

What cinched it for me as a little extra touch, specifically the path leading down from Highway 50 to the Lake. We take our dogs on this hike (it is about a 20 minute walk), and it is just perfectly mapped. Frame rates are really good, and the main KTVL terminal (such as it is) looks like a cathedral at night. Really well done.

Thanks John.  I am impressed with it too.  What impressed me was a little thing.  The Homewood float plane dock.

Back in the late 50s I learned to fly in a Luscombe 8E on floats from Commodore Center in Sausalito.  They also flew charters up to Lake Tahoe in SeaBees and a Piaggo amphibian.  I would ride along sometimes and they always landed at Homewood.  Glad Orbx didn't forget that.

One summer afternoon we flew up in a SeaBee,  It was a very hot day and due to the density altitude and the under powered SeaBee we couldn't take off from the lake.  Had to spend the night and wait until early morning to take of and fly back to Commodore..
