August 5, 201411 yr Just put together a spanking brand new Asus Z87-A motherboard, a Noctua NH-D14 CPU cooler that was recommended in this Forum, and an Intel i5-4670k CPU,powered by an Antec Tru-Power 650W Power Supply Unit and 4x4Gb DDR3-12800 Corsair Vengeance RAM modules, with on-board VGA output until I buy a suitable Nvidia card Problem: It will not POST with ALL four RAM modules in their respective Dual Channel slots Resolution Steps: Tested each RAM module individually in Memory Slots 1 and 2 in turn; system POSTs no problem, but only shows up as 1333MHz instead of 1600MHz, but nevertheless, proves that each 4Gb RAM module is functional. Tried Memory Slots 3 & 4 and the system does not POST Any ideas? Faulty Memory Controllers/Slots 3 & 4? Or faulty motherboard? Please help. Thanks. Rick Almeida
August 5, 201411 yr Sounds like the board. Google a utility call MEMTEST86 and run that off a usb stick. That will test the memory sticks. They come back good, it's definitely the board P3D v4.5 MSFS2020 Hisense 50" 4K TV Ryzen 9600x 64gb DDR5 6000mhz, Asrock B650m HDV/M.2 Gigabyte 16gb 9070XT, Thermalright Aqua Elite 240mm 2TB NVMe Boot/FS2020 Drive, 2TB NVMe P3D Drive. August 5, 201411 yr Author Thank you for your suggestion, Charlatan. I already have that utility, but see no reason to run it as I have already stated, there is absolutely nothing wrong with each individual RAM module, as each has been tested one-by-one, in Memory Slots 1 & 2 and the system POSTs. It's only in Memory Slots 3 & 4 when the board does not POST, so running a MemTest86 would prove nothing. But as per your first line, I suspect the board, which would be a first for me as far as Asus motherboards are concerned. Have always gone for them as they have been so reliable.Guess, there is a first time for everything. Rick Almeida
August 5, 201411 yr I have had a board in the past with 2 dodgy ram slots, think it was an Asrock. Possibly also worth checking it has the latest bios on? August 5, 201411 yr Let it post in whatever ram config that worked. Install all your hardware / mobo drivers. Update BIOS to the latest and retry. August 5, 201411 yr Author Thanks for that Angelo. But as the board is brand new, I will take it back to the seller. I'm going there any way as I need a new GPU. Rick Almeida

August 6, 201411 yr Author Update Turns out that for some totally inexplicable reason----given unlike other older CPUs, e.g. AMD Socket A, there are no physical sockets on the motherboard and pins on the CPU to mate, just a Grid Array----a microscopic pin on the Asus motherboard was bent, which I find hard to believe as the Intel i5-4670k CPU has two notches to locate correctly in the CPU socket. Anyway, the seller's front-desk man after first refusing to sort it out, and then me asking for a manager, it eventually got resolved, FOC, and the 16Gb of RAM POSTed and showed up. Matter resolved. August 6, 201411 yr Saw you were from Preston way in your profile, and have had similar, shall we say, "dealings" with them in the past, where I've had to create a scene in their showroom to get any joy ;o) P3D v4.5 MSFS2020 Hisense 50" 4K TV Ryzen 9600x 64gb DDR5 6000mhz, Asrock B650m HDV/M.2 Gigabyte 16gb 9070XT, Thermalright Aqua Elite 240mm 2TB NVMe Boot/FS2020 Drive, 2TB NVMe P3D Drive. August 12, 201411 yr Author Anyone familiar with an Asus Z87-A motherboard? I so do wish Asus would not go changing things that worked. Just built a new i5-4670k system based on the Asus Z87-A motherboard. Installed Windows7 x64 Pro on a Samsung 840 PRP 256Gb SSD. All is working fine except for some weird reason, I just cannot get this particular Asus motherboard to boot from that particular Samsung SSD. Instead, boot-up after boot-up, I keep getting the Asus BIOS menu and despite selecting the SSD to be the first boot device, it keeps going back to the ancilliary back-up IDE drives, which I do not want. Never ever had any issues in all my previous Asus motherboards with selecting which device was designated the first boot device. Anyone with any ideas how to rectify this before I lose patience and rip out everything and revert to my old Q6600-based system? Rick Almeida
August 12, 201411 yr Hi Rick, I have that board as well as NickN. You might want to read his Computer "Bible" and his guide to setting up the Haswell and the ASUS Z87 boards - http://www.simforums.com/forums/haswell-48ghz-on-air-building-a-haswell-system_topic46180.html. I also ran into the problems you are having with the BIOS not recognizing the boot drive. Every time I tried to boot up it would come up with a window asking which drive was my boot drive. Unfortunately I do not recall how I fixed it but I reset my BIOS to the default and then cleared the CMOS. After clearing the CMOS and restarting, I went back into the BIOS and made sure the boot drive was set properly (make sure you have no USB drives connected or one of those USB memory sticks. Save the BIOS and restart. All should be good. Best regards, Jim Young | AVSIM Online! - Simming's Premier Resource!
