While waiting for my flight at Honolulu when I moved back to the mainland on Monday I this dedicated Hawaii Alaska 737:

I assume the add-on winglet is for more fuel economy but has anyone heard of this?

Yeah - there are a bunch of threads on it here, actually.

It's not a new 737 - it's just new winglets, called split scimitar winglets.

They're parts designed for the 737Max but are retrofitable to NGs already with winglets and give near on 2% fuel improvements! A lot of airlines are falling over themselves to fit them ASAP. Plus it is great marketing work for Boeing to wave at any passing Sharklet equipped A320.....

I'm not certain, but I don't think the scimitar winglets are the same as what will be on the MAX.

Southwest has been slapping them on their 800's. Not sure if they will do the 700's or not.

If you look at the images of the SWA 800 with the new livery, it's got them.

They say they will do about 50 planes by the end of the year. Some are already flying

and can be seen in utoob videos.

You are correct. The Aviation Partner blended winglets that are being adapted to existing 737's perform sililar to the new winglets that will be on the MAX. The difference is that these are an extension of the existing winglet style, while the MAX winglets will be fully integrated together.

Your talent is a gift from God. How you use your talent is your gift back to God.

I've picked a plane up from Greenville where they were doing the mods. They do a fair amount of work to get these on. New stringers, counterweights, rerig the ailerons...

Matt Cee

You sure these were exchange mods? I know non winglet ac need these internal wing mods doing, we have 2x -700 still without, but for ac already Winglet equipped I2d been told it was a bolt on swap.

Anyway, looking at them side by side as I did two days ago in DUS, the new winglets are quite a different shaps at teh top too, they are not just bolting on the lower bit!

Not a bolt-on swap. We have some -900 that have no winglets and can't get the mod, but we have -800W and -900W that are.

I was surprised with all the work it took.

If you drag one, the new part is bolt-on after that. And I hope I don't find out about that other than reading about it.

Jst has a really good look at an article and have to admit the Max winglet IS different to the new one I keep seeing. Doh. Must look closer.

Now I've seen the flightdeck as well, I'm looking forward to flying one...

We get our first ones in two years.......if I'm still hereç
