February 5, 201511 yr Needing some experience on this NGX pilots! On the DES page you have the TAI entry for FL or altitudes you require to have it on. How can you do this in FSX as we don't have ACARS or company uploads for cloud levels etc? I use ASN but this doesn't show clouds when TAT is <10+ or visible moisture! Other query is the SPD REST entry in the DES page of the FMC, it defaults to 240/10000. For certain airports i fly too it requires these speed and alt rest... MAX 280 FL245 and FL100 MAX 250 at or below FL100 MAX 220 at or below FL70 How can i comply with these? What is the recommended way? I tried to set 220/7000 after FL100 i was in VNAV and the speed then changed to my ECON des speed of 273. The FMS is then thinking i'm above FL100 or something. Can someone help cheers! February 5, 201511 yr Easy way is to forget the automatics and fly the airplane, or at least use MCP speed. The problem you have is you need a waypoint at a specific altitude where you can enter a speed in the LEGS pages, but lacking the waypoint your alternative is to use the MCP. Dan Downs KCRP
February 5, 201511 yr Author Yeh good airmanship but i would of liked VNAV to take care of it. So could you use the SPD REST entry for those alt? Vernon Howells

It's not critical, if you put in 10,000 and the icing starts at 15,000 the world doesn't end. Other query is the SPD REST entry in the DES page of the FMC, it defaults to 240/10000. It's tempting to try and make the box do everything but in this case you are simply making things more complex than they need to be.

February 6, 201511 yr The other way that might be useful, is create a custom waypoint, then add an altitude and speed restriction for that custom waypoint on the legs page. This isn't recommended though, because it modifies your flight planned route. As the boys have outlined, MCP is best to meet those requirements. Descent rate and energy management will require your monitoring so you can adjust as needed. Brian Nellis Edit - I didn't read your post properly. There isn't a way to create a custom waypoint, for those types of restrictions. So MCP is the only option. Brian Nellis
February 6, 201511 yr Would be good if ASN would state cloud layer height on the MAP We rarely have accurate info on the cloud tops in the real world and end up estimating it most of the time. If in doubt enter the tops higher and bases lower than you think it actually is. It will make the path shallower and the worst case will be that you need to add a little power to maintain speed if you don't actually end up having the anti-ice on.
February 6, 201511 yr In the US, the area forecasts usually include tops but other than pireps I know of no other source. Dan Downs KCRP
February 6, 201511 yr It seems its a guessing game for now It's not that critical, a rough estimate is fine. You are putting way too much thought into it.
