FO won't let me talk to ATC

Featured Replies

Using latest release if MCE and RC4, I ask (and see the words in red) for the FO to handle ATC, which he does. I do this during the cruise part of the flight so I can do other things.

When I get close to the destination airport (90 miles or so), I tell the FO I have the comms or I will handle ATC (and see the words in red). But, he never lets me talk to them. He keeps answering ATC.

In either case, the FO doesn't acknowledge that I was actually heard (not sure he is supposed to do that).

Is there something I'm doing wrong?

Been a while since I flew (FSX install wonky) but from what I recall you can try saying "Pay attention"! Or Just use PTT and go ahead to call atc. Also try the menu settings.

Sorry i can't recall specifics. I do remember the FO sometimes ignored me, like he was in his own loop or something. I tended to let the FO or even the FE work the radio's in my later flights,(3 crew on the (727/707/md11) since they were rather good at acknowledgement in RC4.However, if you require an alternative runway/ destination just use your PTT and contact atc or use the on screen menu.

I am sure someone will be along with the definitive answer.

Good luck!

The FO still listens to me. I can get him to set flaps, change heading/course, etc. He just won't stop handling the ATC. Sometimes I can miss an instruction on approach (altitude, heading, runway, etc.). Since the FO immediately acknowledges the instruction, I can't get them to tell me again.

In rc4 "say again" is key combination control shift backslash.

Unless you've changed it!!

You can find the combinations  in tab "keyboard" after rc4 startup (or in the manual ;-))

Good tip, John.

I knew you could do that (it's usually on the screen in the RC window). But, when the FO is handling the ATC, that option doesn't appear. But, it still works! So, that part of the problem is solved.

Still need to get the FO to stop answering the ATC after I tell him that I want to do so...

You could try taking the radio over (but you have to be very quick)

My radio

I have the radio

There is no RC4 bult-in option to pause FO while he's handling ATC.

You could also intervene with a request to say again

"control KLM 143 say again" that should get "Repeat" option to be triggered then you may be able to take over from there.

I have told the FO that I'll handle the comms or I'll handle the ATC. It shows in red text exactly what I said. But, he still immediately replies to ATC so I never get the chance.

I'm guessing no one else has this issue?
