May 13, 201511 yr One of the drawbacks of coming back to this sim after a period of a few years is that what was state-of-the-art back then has now been superceded, and trying to upgrade can be a bit of a challenge when you've already got an installation in place. I'm wanting to add some of the ORBX scenery to my previous FSX install, especially while they have the 37% off sale. I would assume the place to start would be FTX Global and FTX Vector, and possibly FTX openLC for Europe, then go on from there with their PNW scenery and a few airports. Back when I was still using FSX, I had installed FSGenesis mesh (global and North America), Ultimate Terrain X (U.S., Canada, and Europe) and GEX (North America). I'm working on the assumption that the ORBX products would conflict with some or all of these. How many of them would I have to uninstall in favor of ORBX, or would some work with it? Is there anything else I should know before making this potential upgrade? Thanks in advance. James David Walley Ryzen 7 7700X, 32 GB, RTX 3080
May 13, 201511 yr No problem with the FSGenesis mesh. You should, however, uninstall both UTX and GEX as they will be replaced by Vector and Global respectfully. That said, some folks feel that UTX may be the better choice over Vector...particularly in Europe. I haven't seen anyone tout GEX over Global though. The big change will come with Global. I'd start there first and see how things look. I don't fly often in Europe so I can't really comment on the European LC. May 14, 201511 yr JD, UTX and GEX have both been significantly upgraded since your day so before investing in what really amount to replacements for those, I'd see about updating what you have.
May 29, 201511 yr Author Thanks for the responses so far...one big question, though: I know that ORBX is big on FSGlobal mesh, and have heard about problems with some scenery (KSEA being one notable example) if FSGlobal isn't installed. If I decide to go with ORBX, would there be any compatibility reason for investing in FSGlobal as well instead of using it with my existing FSGenesis? I would think that mesh is mesh, and presumably both would be accurate in terms of elevations, but would there be any reason why that is not so? James David Walley Ryzen 7 7700X, 32 GB, RTX 3080
May 29, 201511 yr The Orbx regions, like PNW or NCA do not require any mesh or other stuff to function. FTX Global gives you improved textures worldwide, that look similar to the Orbx regions. That is where I would start.. Bert
