cache scenery. A word of warning

HiFor some time I have not been able to use the 'create a flight' menu. FS just locks up.It was also taking an AGE for FS to load up for the first time.I only just got round to trying to solve the problem, and it occured to me that I had selected to cache many of my addon sceneries. Simply reselecting the 'use this scenery directly' solved the problem. FS also starts 10 times quicker. The main culprit appeared to be the VFR photographic scenery, as there are just too many files to cache.I've posted this as I had previously asked for a solution and found several users with the same problem of not being able to use the 'create a flight menu', so it's worth checking before resorting to a reinstall.Hope it helps someone one day!RegardsGraeme

Does this fix of yours not cause the sim to sometimes pause (stop) as it loads in scenery?allen

Really good advice Graeme. One should never cache scenery that is already resident on the HDD. Doing so will cause the sim to copy the scenery to the cache (it's a disc cache, not a memory cache) before loading any textures and, as you have noted, this can really degrade performance. Doug

Yes, the cache option just causes FS to copy the scenery to the cache folder as it loads. It should always be unchecked unless you run your scenery off a CD or slow removable drive or something.

Hi allBarry, the option to decide to cache or not can be found by going to settins, entering the scenery library, then select the scenery from the list and select edit. In the box that opens you'll see that 'use this scenery directly' will be selected by default.Allen, it sure does make the textures load a little slower with that irritating pause when you switch views, but my FS was stopping working completely and uncaching all sceneries prevented me from doing the dreaded re-install.I haven't actually flown anywhere since doing the fix, and I was getting a long pause on approach as textures loaded. Maybe not caching will fix this too. I'll let you know.RegardsGraeme
