Request info on the approach to St. Barts

Featured Replies

Could anyone please provide details on how to make the proper approach to St. Barts runway 10? I used to have it, but I can't find it. I could not find anything on the net. Since this is a very difficult approach altitude and speed is critical! I believe special certification is required of all pilots intending to land there. Thanks for your help!Airbus

You own a simulator, right? Why don't you then try to manage speed/altitude in such a way as to make a good landing at St.Barts. Clearly if you fail you will be able to walk away from the crash and try again ...;) . Oh, and don't try to land in a jet there ...Michael J.WinXP-Home SP2,AMD64 3500+,Abit AV8,Radeon X800Pro,36GB Raptor,1GB PC3200,Audigy 2http://www.precisionmanuals.com/images/forum/747400.jpghttp://www.hifisim.com/images/asv_beta_member.jpg

I quess I am just a stickler for "flying by the book." I have done it successfully MOST of the time, but my passengers get upset if I land hard or have to brake hard to keep from running off the end of the runway.:)

I think the only "book" about this approach is that you have to squeeze beween two mountain peaks where you are only feet above some road then plunge steeply into the runway. So if you really want to fly it as in real life you better have some very good mesh scenery otherwise you may miss the exact spot (crest) through which they pass. Besides, the rest is lots of flaps and pure stick and rudder flying.Michael J.WinXP-Home SP2,AMD64 3500+,Abit AV8,Radeon X800Pro,36GB Raptor,1GB PC3200,Audigy 2http://www.precisionmanuals.com/images/forum/747400.jpghttp://www.hifisim.com/images/asv_beta_member.jpg

Good old TFFJ, one of my fav's! Look at SABA too, the lib has a good rendition of it here for FS2004.http://dangerousairports.com/dad/info.php?icao=TFFJI actually had an approach plate for here but don't know what I did with it (it will bug me to no end now).XP Home SP2Asus P4P800-SE Intel 3.0GHZDDR 400 D/C 2x512MBLeadtek 6800GT 256MB (71.84)SB AudigyMSFF2 & X45 throttleSee you in the fence...CYYZ

St. Bart is not what it used to be. The hill has been graded, so that flying through the Col de la Tourmente is no longer such a great hazard. Here is what you had to do previously: - on final, line up the col with the threshold markingshttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/122612.jpgAt this point, you should have full flaps and approach speed. - you will come over the col very close to the surface. Judge your altitude from reference to the martyr (the shrine or roadside cross); you should be below the martyr, but watch out for the cars on the road!http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/122613.jpgThere will be a lot of turbulence here, as the trade winds come through the col, so your aircraft will be buffeted around a lot. - point the nose of the aircraft down!http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/122614.jpg - set power to idle, reverse props (if you can) and brake hard once you touch down. You must go around if you are too fast at the marks.http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/122615.jpg - continue to the runway end; this will give your brakes a chance to cool down and you will get a view of some pretty girls on the beach.http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/122616.jpgOf course, this is the old approach, and it is a good thing that everything has changed. But, you can still practice it in Flight Simulator. Here is a shot of the work that was carried out.http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/122617.jpgBy the way, most of the pictures are by Philippe Mol

Also Airbus, download the scenery created by Christian Delblondwhich apart from being very realistic aligns the runway correctly.Regards, JAHamilton - Los Angeles.
