Gboz I already have a 50" 4k screen but struggle to get scenery levels up to what i can get in prepar3d. I have to turn things down a lot and wanted a starting point from another 4k user. I'm in a similar situation to rob just with weaker hardware!

Strider, thanks for that! I will try those this morning.

Ok, I found an issue.

I tried your settings and I'm getting a solid 30 fps sat on the runway.

I changed to the carenado 172 and I still get 30. Flying over the city still 30. All good so far.

Started turning up airport detail and world detail distance to extreme and still get around 30 with it dropping to high 20s occasionally. Set visibility to around 40 miles as it is a bit more realistic and regained a few fps.

I noticed this was all in windowed mode so I ticked run at full screen and it drops to 2 fps!

Unticked and it back to 30fps.

Obviously this is with no scenery add ons. I tried in the uk where I have w2xp UK Pro installed and I get about 15fps with detail up in windowed mode. Full screen back to 2fps.

4x ssaa kills it down to about 4fps no matter if I'm full screen or windowed but I expected that. Shame as I need 4x to get rid of the shimmering in the distance.

Is this a known issue or just something I'm having problems with?

How small did you have it windowed ? Try it again with my settings at KVNY at full screen, default cessna 172. You should be getting high twenties !

4xssaa kills my frames, unless i am outside of the city. I just live with the shimmers. You can untick HDR if the shimmers bothers you that much.

How much VRAM does your video card have ?

I had it filling the screen using exactly the same settings as you showed in your screen grab. i.e. not having the full screen box ticked.

I get 30fps using your exact settings. As soon as I tick the use full screen box it drops to about 2 or 3 fps.

I have 2 970s in sli but obviously sli doesn't work with xplane so I also tried it with sli disabled.

Is the 970 powerful enough for plane at 4k? I'f debate that.....

This is an interesting topic. I was quite happy with XP before 10.40, running it on a 4790K/970GTX rig. With 10.40 performance went down (not significantly in fps but in terms of stutters) at the same time it went up with Prepar3D V3. This is on an Acer 27" 4K monitor at 30hz. XP with HD/UHD mesh and g2xpl photoscenery. Still fps between 20 and 30 in the bay area. I would therefore say that the 970 can easily do 4K on XP.

As stated, I'm hitting 30fps at 4K with the settings strider posted, it is more the issue I discovered that as soon as I tick the box 'use full screen' that performance drops. That is the exact opposite of what I was expecting. I always thought running full screen should give better performance.

The system obviously has enough power to run xplane as it will do it windowed, it's really weird that it won't do it in true full screen mode. The reason I started questioning performance was because I never dreamed of trying it not in full screen mode. Just a shame it won't use my other 970 as well.

Is the 970 a 4gig card or a 6gig card ? If you are on a 4gig card you are probably running out of vram. I know I was pushing 6 gigs with my install and settings. Ticking or unticking full screen has no FPS effect on my system. You might want to try installing a clean copy of XPX and see if that makes a difference. I notice a huge difference in FPS between my install with all the addons and the clean copy. I am going to install one addon at a time and test to see where the bottle necks are !

Sorry for the delayed response - real life getting in the way as usual...

I am posting two screenshots I took over OMDB Dubai (scenery I am working on) in allmost fulll screen windowed mode (can´t use full-screen as X-Plane gets screwed up by my second, smaller monitor).

I also post the settings I use.

BTW this is with scattered clouds and 100NM visibility.

Performance varies heavily with the type of terrain I am over, it can drop to as low as 20 in urban sprawl and go to well over 50 in remote areas, higher over the ocean.

I have the (totally unscientific) feeling that performance is more restricted by the CPU and the amount of objects to display, than by sheer graphics card power...

Thanks for the screen shots. I am beginning to suspect that I'm on the limit if my vram and using true full screen might just tip me over the graphics memory limit which is why my performance tanks. I'll do some closer monitoring of vram tomorrow. If I lower my settings to just below the vram threshold and performance picks up it will confirm this.

Thanks for all the help guys.
