Flight tuning advice for 'underpowered' turboprop?

Featured Replies

Hi. I posted about this some years back, but still have some issues. I love the Milton Shupe Dash 7 and after a lot of work with xml files and similar I have it working really nicely in FS9. The one thing that is still not right is that even in cruise flight, I cannot get anywhere near the speed that a Dash-7 should be capable of; with full RPM on the propellers and max throttles, the a/c stabilises at only 170kts on the speedometer. At 20,000', cruising, overspeed would be >230KIAS, according to the instruments.

I have reduced the drag_scalar and pitch_scalar values from 1.0 to 0.1 and that has helped a bit. I do not want to alter values like power_scalar as the aircraft is tuned properly for taxiing. Increasing the plane's power 'globally' means the plane wants to run away (and !) on the taxiways. The fuel also runs out in double-quick time of course, and the fuel and torque cockpit gauges go crazy...

I know that, this being a plane from Mr. Shupe, the FDE should be pretty accurate, but I would like to get a bit more airspeed, nevertheless! What other elements in the aircraft.cfg file could I change that would increase airspeed without affecting overall power for taxiing? The AircraftContainer SDK is very helpful of course, but I clearly haven't got this quite right yet..

The 7 wasn't exactly a fast machine and I would think that the dev got the FDE and flight characteristics as close to real as possible. You say the a/c stabilizes at 170kias, but at what altitude?  170kias at 16,000 is approx 224ktas which is about all you're going to get from these things. If you want faster, I'd suggest trading up.

I am really going on the 'barber pole', which shows that the overspeed limit at cruise altitude of 20,000' is 230knots, whereas I am at 170knots max.

It's not a deal breaker! The plane is great as it is, I am not saying otherwise. Even if it is not quite real-world, I'd still like to get a bit more if possible, even so. (I can only climb very gently too, or the IAS falls off).

I do fly Dash 8's too, BTW! I am not a 'speed freak' per se..

Thanks.

Thanks for the link...

In fact, I don't get much more than 170KIAS in level flight at 1000', so I still think the aircraft is 'underpowered' (no?)..

By any chance, are you adjusting the Prop Pitch and Condition Levers once you're at Cruise Altitude (or for that matter, at 1000')? You mentioned you've got everything set to the Firewall (Max. Throttle & Prop Pitch)...

When I'm flying an airplane with PT6's, I usually pull the Prop Pitch back to about 1600-1700 RPM, decrease Throttle to 80-85%, and adjust the Condition Levers back a bit as well.

Hi, yes, I have tried adjusting props and condition levers, but to no avail..Thanks
