September 23, 200520 yr Hey everyone, about a month ago I had posted about CTD and blue screen errors on my system. I did a search but did not find the exact info I need. Well, I get sudden CTD's all the time now. The event viewer shows unknown dll errors events 6 and 7. I am now convinced my scenery cfg is bugged out. I have tried so many things that I can't back track. If I try to put the original back in the fs9 root folder, I get an error on startup of fs9. Is there a way to rebuild the cfg somehow, or anything else I can do? If this can't be done, can I install a fresh version of fs9 into a new directory and keep all of my add-ons intact? I am not sure where or how to transfer them over properly however. The scenery add-ons, I would be willing to reinstall since it only is a couple, verses ALOT of aircraft. Thanks for any tips. I dread reinstalling fs9. Best regards, Jeff
September 23, 200520 yr Commercial Member Hi there, there are a number of utilities that will check the integrity of the scenery.cfg for you. The one I've been using very successfully is Steve Greenwoods utility available on his website: http://www.fs-traveler.com/resources-g.shtml (third link from the top)However, problems with the scenery.cfg usually give very specific error messages (e.g., "Area XXX not found"). More likely it's a different cause though it can't hurt to try Steve's tool anyway. Have you tried re-installing your default textures in SceneryWorldtexture form Disk 4? Many add-ons change files in those folders and a single missing or faulty bmp can lead to global and/or seasonal CTDs. Just rename your current texture subfolder to texture.current and load the default for comparison. If that cures the crashes you can add back the additional files in small groups to find the culprit(s).Good luck!Holger
September 23, 200520 yr Holger, thanks for the info. Yeah, I messed things up over the past month pretty good. As they say, "If it's not broken, don't fix it" Well, I should have known better to tinker. Off I go to find the culprit, and when I find it, its .......well you know. Thanks again, Jeff
September 23, 200520 yr Holger, just a quick update. After I extracted the zipped cab file and replaced my texture folder with the disk#4 default texture in the scenery/world folder, FS9 was crashing right to the desktop upon loading a flight. So, I put back the one I had in there. I ran that utility for the scenery cfg and placed the one it made into my root FS9 folder. I can load a flight, but have not tried it for more than a minute. I will let you know. The utility did not mention any errors at all, but what do I have to lose. I also noticed that when I pan, my performance is not too good since this problem first started. My fps might show 25 or 26,(I lock the sim at 26) but it acts like I am in the teens with alot of studdering. If this does not work, I am reinstalling the whole darn thing. I may just do my upgrade to WIN XP and up the processor, MB, and new ram. I am in need of that anyway. If you have any other suggestions, please let me know. I am game for anything. Thanks again, Jeff
September 25, 200520 yr OK , I have tried everything, and either get CTD's without notice on the ground, in flight , or approach, and when loading the flight. I want to reinstall FS. I want to put it into a new directory. What is the best method? I want to also have my add on AC intact without having to reinstall all of them if possible. I will reinstall the scenery add ons being I only have flightzone rhode island, UT USA, and fly tampa seatac. I think this will resolve my issues.(I Hope) The other thing I was thinking of was to reinstall the 9.1 patch. I say this because the symptoms I have are almost identical to what I had before the patch came out. Can the patch be installed over itself without messing things up further? Thanks to all here at AVSIM for your help and understanding. I never thought I would be on the needing help end, rather than helping others. I understand now more than ever how frustrating it is seeing this side of the coin. Best regards, Jeff
September 26, 200520 yr I did not want to get lost on page three. Forums are hoppin today. Bump... This is in regards to my latest reply in this thread. Best regards, Jeff
September 26, 200520 yr I had the problem once and the only thing I was able to do was a complete reinstall. That was pretty depressing and it took quit awhile. I had tried a few things and nothing worked. Sorry to say but your best bet might be to just reinstall. Andrew
September 26, 200520 yr Hi Jeff,No fun when things go wrong! Have you thought about making a seperate instance of FS9 then transferring things one at a time until you find the offending files? I think you can edit the registry to point to a seperate instance of FS9 so that your add-ons can be re-installed. I know this is a pain, but it seems that nothing else is working for you right now. September 26, 200520 yr Hello Andrew, thanks for your reply. Also, hello Bruce and thank you too. I do want to reinstall FS9 in to a new directory, but I am not positive which files and folders to drag over to retain my add on aircraft. That is the info I need before I proceed. Any suggestions? Thanks again for your time. I know there has been a million posts about this, but I have not been able to pin point this exact info. Best regards, Jeff
September 26, 200520 yr Author I'm suprised no-one has mentioned FlightSim Manager:-http://www.ranainside.comThis app has solved SO many issue for me that I don't install anything without checking FS9 afterwards. It will also install most aircraft and sceneries automatically - but it's main feature is the "doctor" component.Good Luck,pj i7 [email protected] | 32GB RAM | EVGA RTX 3080Ti | Maximus Hero VII | 512GB 860 Pro | 512GB 850 Pro | 256GB 840 Pro | 2TB 860 QVO | 1TB 870 EVO | Seagate 3TB Cloud | EVGA 1000 GQ | Win10 Pro | EK Custom water cooling.
