I looked through hundreds of returns from my search question, none of which seemed to supply much help.  Can someone suggest a free airliner (or, more?) they have downloaded that included a really competent FMC?  Many thanks for any suggestions...

Sadly there isn't a freeware one that includes a fully working FMC, if by competent you mean using current/updatable navdata.

 

You may be interested in adding VasFMC to a good freeware Airbus model or possibly the default  A320

You will probably need the gauge only version rather than the standalone version.

You may also want to download Pln2Fmc from the Avsim library, which is a tool to convert your FSX flightplans into VASfmc format

Search the library for "VASfmc" for other stuff including a A380 with VC that is VASfmc ready
