May 16, 201610 yr I added an extra fan to it on the right to gain that extra 1°C hopefully. As you can see on pics, all case fans as been swapped for Noctua fans. I'll see how I go, but I'm not going to bother to be honest. Not for just 2 degrees. I don't see the point considering the extra decibels. By the way, I gave a try to windows 10 but it lasted 24 hours. I just couldn't cope with the way windowsupdate works. After using it for a couple of hours, I had already made ~10 hacks to the registry to disable this, or that, define ethernet as "metered" to pause the windowsupdate downloads, and see that it has already upgraded my chipset and nvidia drivers without my permission. Enough of that, went back to Seven. That's something I'll no doubt expedience as I went for W10. I did go for W10 pro though, I gather you have more control of updates with Pro. There's also a big W10 update on the way, not sure if updates will change.
May 17, 201610 yr I am using Win 10 pro since day 1 and never had problems except for the November Update. had to reinstall Windows there. Otherwise: Perfect OS in my eyes.
May 17, 201610 yr Author There's always pro and cons Both OS have their benefits and downsides. I don't deny that W10 has many benefits over W7, it's just that the benefit:downside ratio is way negative to my eyes. Nevermind this, I tried a very conservative OC this week end, so far so good 4.6Ghz @ 1.35v, never exceeded 61°C during stress tests. Martin, thanks a lot for directing me to the D14, it's just insane cooling performance compared to U12. With a similar voltage on the 3820, I was in the 75-80°C territory before. That's for a H24 OC and Hyperthreading is disabled. So far so good! I yet have to lower the voltage down to 1.30v, the only thing I lack this week is time to experiment. Guess I'll stay to 4.6Ghz, which is just enough for P3D. -Jerome "In thrust we trust"
May 17, 201610 yr Martin, thanks a lot for directing me to the D14, it's just insane cooling performance compared to U12. The 15S is great isn't it? That was why I commented that, in my opinion, the 15S is the D14/15 perfected. You have to hand it to Noctua. Many companies would have been quite content with having the best air cooler out there, but not Noctua. Despite the D15 being the best, they took the time to update it further.
May 17, 201610 yr 4.6Ghz @ 1.35v and 61°C is really good... I cannot get this kind of result with my CPU. HT on or off?
