Why do so many overseas flights stop at Anchorage?

My guess would be that it is a good jumping off spot to Asia. When I was there, there were a number of Asian 747s.

Reason is because the load up those 74s in Asia as heavy as they can go.  Not enough fuel to make it to the lower 48 hence stop at Anchorage.  I was just there this summer and you never see so many jumbos anywhere else.  Very cool!
