Got to keep you honest, John. :)RC4 (and previous version 3) is great for offline ATC and I'm sure you recall I'm a dedicated user. However for those a bit more experienced and can meet the real-time demands and ruling structure they might prefer VATSIM on-line ATC (free except for any Internet charges).I am not among the latter but since you brought up ATC I felt compelled to make the user aware of this choice. As far as software release scheduling referred to in the original post users unless there is a major upgrade of thed base FS product are not compelled to purchase anything so even purchasing distribution is a choice of the user. Many can't wait to get their hands on new or upgraded products and their purchasing schedule is up to them. Vendors should not be in a position of enforcing user purchasing distribution habits. The exception to this might be limited time upgrade discounts for existing users.(BTW, John, love hearing your voice say "mind your altitude, now . . ." still in RC4.)Disclaimer: I am not a member of the RC development team normally. No financial compensation has been received other than an early RC4 released product to test the published version. I am a paying user for the RC3.1 version. Had to put this in you know.

Hi Ron,LOL Thanks for those kind words :-)I rerecorded all those phrases for v4 you'll be glad to hear - and you can always de-select me if you want ;-)I'm sure the vatsim/offline atc debate will continue - I figure they should be seen as complementary not competitive.Nice that there's a bit of choice and variety on the atc side of the hobby as well. All the best,John

I agree Ron, it's up to the buyer in making his/her purchasing decisions...but so much stuff at one time, some of these releases could have been released earlier or later (depending on the developer)...There is only so much space/room/capital in a retailer

>I am not among the latter but since you brought up ATC I felt>compelled to make the user aware of this choice.Ron,As far as VATSIM goes, I hope you can shed some light on the following topic.I am curious - if I go now and check who is flying on VATSIM at the moment I see some folks are flying between airports whose towers are not manned. Say I would like to fly from Portland, Oregon to Bangor Maine what sort of ATC could I expect? Would I run into some controller somewhere or I would be totally alone? I clearly see some folks at the moment flying between some secondary airports, if they do not get ATC coverage why the are on VATSIM?Michael J.http://www.precisionmanuals.com/images/forum/pmdg_744F.jpghttp://www.hifisim.com/images/asv_beta_member.jpg

Come on guys...this tread was on new releases not on gripes with ATC/Radar Contact. :(

Oops no intention to derail the thread or to do any griping. Honest. RC4 is a new release (due December) and Ron was just pointing out the variety that is available to us now, and the need to make informed choices (which is surely the point/problem here). There is so much available that even if we could afford all the stuff that's coming out we'd never have time to use it or disk space to store it. It's a nice problem to have though, just makes the choices tough!Personally I think the extended SoCal megascenery just might sneak onto my list for Santa. Some relaxing 'low and slow' flying while digesting the Christmas Turkey! But then, I could really do with some new rudder pedals ;-)All the best,John

John...As soon as Mega SoCal is available, Im ordering along with the feelThere 737-300/400/500 CD!The Aerosoft/PMDG 747-400 is already on the Xmas List! :-hah >Oops no intention to derail the thread or to do any griping.>Honest. Again I am not a VATSIM user but in some secondary areas especially in low traffic times the real-world controller jurisdictions expand so that an approach controller at a major airport might be directing traffic for quite a large adjacent area including traffic into none-contrlled airports to the point where the pilot can navigate on his/her own to fly the remainder of the approach. If you scan real-world airports in none heavy traffic times you might, for example, find the same controller on approach and departure. You may even find the departure and approach frequencies assigned the same during these low level times. In addition at some smaller areas without local control enroute controllers can provide some vectoring separation services to the point where the pilot can direct the rest of the procedure.VATSIM may be able to duplicate these conditions. If you are registered you can go to the VATSIM center site if interested and look at their controller schedules I believe.KBGR and KPDX are class C airports and are quite large. The facilities directories show that ATC attends full time services for these. Whether there are enough VATSIM controllers are around in the wee hours I do not know.Perhaps VATSIM has a forum where you can find out.
