January 29, 20179 yr Author Is your overclock stable? Did you run overnight tests? I haven't done any long stress tests yet but cpu temperature stays below 73 degrees after one hour of testing so I don't thing it's unstable
January 29, 20179 yr He's not using SGSS according to the NI. Just SS which is a bit easier on the system though still high. Yeah, you're right on that...I thought I saw 8x Sparse -grid. 4,0 or 4,5 or 5,0 ghz in fsx do not matter. fsx is 10 years old and not build to our days, modern pc,s I absolutely disagree. Until last week, I still had a copy of FSX running on an 8-yr-old 4 GHz i7-975 with a GTX480 (and a 1920x1200 monitor), and there's a clear and massive increase in performance between that and a new 5.0 GHz i7-7700K pushing a 3820x2160 4K display. FSX does not take full advantage of the improvements in speed and architecture, but it is not left untouched by them, either. Another thought for the OP--if you only cranked up the cpu mult to overclock the 7700K, you'll need to also increase the cache (aka uncore) mult so that the cache keeps up with the CPU. If you didn't, that could also help explain the lack of an increase in performance. I use a value of 400 MHz below the CPU speed as a rule of thumb, e.g. cpu mult 50, cache mult 46 for a 5 GHz overclock. January 30, 20179 yr I built a new pc last week and was looking to play Flight Simulator X on high settings. Specs: MoBo: Asus Z170 Pro Gaming CPU: Intel Core i7 7700k GPU: MSI GeForce GTX 1060 GAMING X 3G RAM: HyperX Fury 16 GB DIMM DDR4-2666 2 x 8 GB SSD: Samsung SSD 850 EVO 500 GB CPU is liquid cooled by a Corsair H55 and the case has 6 extra fans excluding the GPU and power supply fans. I cranked all settings in FSX to maximum and created myself a 'worst case scenario' (creating all the situations that would require the most of my system) and got 14-22 fps. I decided to increase the clock rate from 4.2 GHz to 5.0 GHz and tweaked the fsx config file and created the same scenario in-game, but got exactly the same amount of fps. I've made the following enhancements to the config file: [JOBSCHEDULER] AffinityMask=84 [bufferpools] Poolsize=39000000 [GRAPHICS] HIGHMEMFIX=1 [Display] WideViewAspect=True TEXTURE_BANDWIDTH_MULT=40 [Main] FIBER_FRAME_TIME_FRACTION=0.15 HideInfoText=1 [sCENERY] SmallPartRejectRadius=3.0 Of course there are settings to decrease but overclocking the pc should help increase the fps, so I'm trying to test this using the same scenario at all times. When it helps, I'll tweak my FSX settings to get exactly the performance I want. I was hoping someone on this forum could help me out. Thanks in advance. First step... Make sure your overclock has actual been applied. To do that, run something like RealBench or CineBench and observe CPUz. Do you see the frequency increase to 5 GHz? Do you see the voltage increase? If not, you have missed something fundamental when overclocking. I have seen this happen when individuals turn off Turbo. Do NOT turn off Turbo. If not, follow these steps... Reset to optimised defaults. Install the latest BIOS. Test the sim with no overclock. No frame rate limiter. Keep it simple. No fancy CFG tweaks, in fact delete the CFG and allow the sim to build a new unadulterated version. All variables must be kept the same. Make a note of the result Overclock with Asus Five Way Optimisation. I'm not asking you to stick to auto overclocking, it's just that 5WO will overclock properly and make all the necessary adjustments for you. This way we know we are bypassing any errors you made when you attempted to overclock. 5WO is to be found within AiSuite. There are a few settings to consider, so if confused PM me and I'll help. 5WO is designed not to apply unsafe voltage or exceed a safe temp. Run RealBench Or CineBench again and monitor with CPUz to verify you have an overclock. Test the sim again, with exactly the same variables. Make a note of the result. If your current 5GHz overclock has applied... RAM latency: Does inmpact frame rate in the sim. However, it shouldn't render a 5GHz overclock totally ineffective. So no, I don't believe this is your issue. As for cache (uncore) if you haven't touched this your motherboards auto rules will have. Asus auto rules are excellent these days. I decided to increase the clock rate from 4.2 GHz to 5.0 GHz and tweaked the fsx config file So basically, by "tweaking" the cfg file you added a variable that wasn't there before you overclocked. All variables before and after overclocking should be as close to identical as you can make them. Settings you made in the cfg "may" have reduced your frame rate.
