GE install concerns

Featured Replies

I have downloaded GE but have yet to purchase and install. What concerns me now is the apparent need to roll back to original FS9Texture and FS9SceneryWorldTexture folders before installing GE. I have heaps of 3rd party stuff in both folders and the thought of having go through the hassle of finding out what they are and how to reinstall them is enough to put off the whole idea of GE. After all I have VOZ and do most of my flying in Australia so for me GE is in the nice to have category - something that would only have occasional use.Bruceb

You might want to check the thread ""Ground Environment 2006 WOW!!!!!!"....Peter and company have answered a lot of questions there that relate to yours.

Yes I have been following that thread but it is so long now and I couldn't find a definitive answer to this issue, only suggestions. GE looks like a great addon for all areas except Australia where VOZ has the edge (esp. after v1.1 is released). As I said originally I'm not particularly keen on rolling back to default texture and worldtexture folders because I have so much 3rd party stuff that I would have to reload if I wanted to keep them post GE install. Furthermore, f I messed with these folders after a GE install is that going to create hassles with GE? There still seem to be gotchas with GE once you start thinking about it, but happy to be put right by someone who knows what they are talking about.Bruceb

I had the same concern. Really want to purchase the GE textures but don't like the hassle of uninstalling BEV. More importantly, I can't get a clear answer (posted in other thread) as to whether I also need to uninstall American Data Roads etc. and add on scenery. Was gonna buy this weekend but just decided to procrastinate. Could take me hours to uninstall and reinstall all the stuff.

Well same here, posted similar concerns in the GE & FScene thread and so far no response. Until I get a satisfactory answer my GE purchase is on hold.Bruceb

Hey everyone, if this helps, I too have BEV. I applied the PreBEV themes for any seasons I had purchased. I may have only had to do it once, but selected each season, then applied the PreBEV theme. Then I launched FS9, then exited FS9 (I am paranoid I quess)then installed GE. I still have BEV on my machine, I just don't have it activated so to speak. I don't know if this was the proper technic, but it worked fine for me this way. I hope this clears thing up. I don't want to give bad advice.

Hello There are more "Gotchas" installing VOZ as this gives you VOZ textures in places that should not have them in so much as they pop up all over the world. This is fine if you only fly in Austrailia but is a problem if you go to the USA or Europe.GE gives full worldwide coverage so the continents do look different which is as it should be.As far as installing and overwriting your 3rd party textures you are fine here as it only overwrites the original flightsim textures in the same way as VOZ did.Make a copy of Scenery/world/texture and call it VOZ.textureMake a copy of /texture and call it VOZ.TextureMake a copy of Scenery/Generic/texture and call it VOZ.textureYou are now able to revert to VOZ just by renaming these folders.Download Frank Bergsons texpand2.zip, this will reinstall only the default textures from the original disks and copy them to the relevent folders and will not overwrite any 3rd party files. Then install GEDo the above process again but call the folders GE.textureYou now have the best of all possible situations as you can go from VOZ to GE and to the Original textures anytime you like, the same applies to BEV and FScene, it takes a bit of disk space but is worth it.We just need a Batch file to automate the renaming and we are all set. Time dig dig out my old MS Dos book i think :-)
