Use your REAL gps with FS2004, pretty cool!

I am a private pilot flying C-172's and I was looking to get a new portable GPS system. I was also looking for a way to learn the gps by using it in Flight Simulator since I enjoy simming when I can't fly for real. I came across this software called AnywhereMap that runs on a pocket pc. http://www.controlvision.com/anyhow, they have a software add-on for MSFS that allows you to use the REAL gps while simming, it's really cool... look here: http://www.anywheremap.com/pages/AWM_GPS_SimTrainer.aspx (made by Flight1)I think this product should be made for ALL popular portable gps's like the Garmin 196/296/396, Lowrance 1000/2000c, etc.Just wondering if anybody has actually used any of these?

Haven't used it and it IS cool but at $24.95 some developers, including DreamFleet include Garmin avionics that you everything...or nearly everything that a real GPS does, and you get it free in the price of the add-on.Alternatively, Reality XP offers the same functionality for the same price but that can be installed in virtually any add-on aircraft. But surely, for those with real world gps devices or PDAs it looks cool.ThanksJim

Hi.Look for "GPSOut" and connect to your com. port, free, and you can use your GPS and Moving Map for yor PDA ("PocketFMS"). If you know how to update it you can use it in the cockpit, but I would not recommend it. TV

I use Pete Dowson's GPSOut to drive my Garmin GPSMap 296. The only slight down side is that it won't drive USB devices, so I had to get an RS-232 cable. It gives me an advantage over the FS built-in 295, in that I also get terrain warnings :-) (although it's only useful in the coverage area of the base map). You can program routes etc in the GPS as normal and get all the progress information you'd expect (FS won't download it's flight plans to the GPS AFAIK), with the advantage of user waypoints, VRPs, towns and other nice VFR things. So far though, I've not found a way of having the GPS generate a breadcrumb trail while in simulation mode.

yeah I still can't decide on what real world gps to get for my flying, either a pda with Anywheremap or a Garmin or Lowrance unit, so much money it's making for a hard decision!

I have a feeling he's refering to real-world flying. I've thought about buying a hand-held aviation GPS, but I want a hand-held radio first. I feel the radio would be more helpful as back-up equipment than the GPS.----------------------------------------------------------------John MorganReal World: KGEG, UND Aerospace Spokane Satillite, Private ASEL 141.2 hrs, 314 landings, 46 inst. apprs.Virtual: MSFS 2004"There is a feeling about an airport that no other piece of ground can have. actaully most pilot I talk to think the gps is a better backup device if you had to choose..

Hi, everyone. Here is my experience, and suggestion, on using GPS, Radio, PDA or any combination of the above.I have, and had, GPSs, PDAs and Handheld Radios that I used in real flying for many years. My first hand held had the rotary switches, before the LCD displays were readily available. It is difficult to choose between what is most useful, unless you know more about the area / environment that one is flying in, but here is my thinking on it.If you fly in a busy area, like around LAX where I normally fly in, in a GA / single pilot, aircraft I would get a GPS ideally that has terrain elevation information, and all the Airspace, Navigation data that you can get, like a Garmin 296/396.If you fly in Texas somewhere that you never have to worry about airspace, get a Radio. I think that there is a GPS Radio combination device that is available, but I am sure that it will lack some things that you will need, either in the Radio or GPS device. I used many brands but I find Sporty

The ones in this region generally seem to prefer the radio because we often fly over large sections uninhabited land and feel that it's the better device if we should find ourselves suddenly stuck out there. That and we have a lot of airshows. Hehe.----------------------------------------------------------------John MorganReal World: KGEG, UND Aerospace Spokane Satillite, Private ASEL 141.2 hrs, 314 landings, 46 inst. apprs.Virtual: MSFS 2004"There is a feeling about an airport that no other piece of ground can have. I have used awm for about 3 years. It is a great product and along with xm weather I almost consider essential. However, you do need to be good with tweaking etc. when using a pda. I never had a problem with reliability other than sometimes having a slight problem connecting the bt xm box.I have just recently moved to a motion800 tablet pc and the following software:http://www.flightprep.com/rootpage.php?page=chartcaseinfoI can't say enough about this package-it is truly amazing!http://mywebpages.comcast.net/geofa/pages/rxp-pilot.jpg

WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE-the best Flight Sim!

yeah I am on the fence as to whether I should get AnywhereMap with a PDA and Bluetooth GPS or just to go get a dedicated handheld like a Garmin 296/396 or Lowrance 2000c.. I fly in the New Jersey/NJ metro area so the airspace around here is NUTS!!!
