When you consider the magnitude of the full moon is around -12 and not much less when in different phases that is a big difference to the brightest star Sirius at -1.46. Even Venus at -4.4 was tricky to spot around sunset but I have seen it just when the sun was above the horizon but I knew exactly where to look. Ray (Cheshire, England).
