March 12, 200620 yr Having just installed several fine looking AI aircraft, assigned these to various flightplans to and from Helsinki Vantaa (EFHK) I am all ready to go. I checked the times of arrival/departure for each aircraft to ensure everything was OK and created flights to match which put me in the default Cessna at the right time and place to observe these AI aircraft. The FISD - EFHK, terrain, class etc is fantastic, hence my choosing this airport on which to base flights. I had a total of 18 active AI aircraft and particularly wanted to check the AIA Aeroflot B767-300GE as I had just designed my first ever flight plan for this bird from UUEE (Moscow) to EFHK, 24Hr as a kind of daily commute. Bingo! Everything works well. The Aeroflot B763 did take off from EFHK pretty much on schedule. I then adjusted the flight time at the same airport to observe its landing. It was due in at 17:55:30GMT and I started my flight just before this at 17:50:00GMT. I waited patiently in the Cessna for the Aeroflot to touchdown from UUEE but it never arrived. By 18:30:00 approx I gave up. I then went back to the menu and adjusted the times which put me in the Cessna again but this time at 18:00:00GMT and of course the Aeroflot was already there. It had landed, on time. The airport was relatively quiet as it was a sunday and there was ample parking available for large aircraft. What I cannot understand is why, seemingly, the aircraft will not land when I am looking....LOL! It is quite happy to do so behind my back but not in front of me. Everything seems to work fine other than this. I thought perhaps there was an AFCAD issue, but I have updated the AFCAD for EFHK and all seems well. The only thing that has suddenly sprung to mind is that I need to update the AFCAD for UUEE Moscow????? Would this make the difference? The aircraft still takes off from EFHK to UUEE. I am puzzled to say the least. One other small query I have is that of AI aircraft that refuse to park at gates. The Aeroflot B767-300 will dock at any large gate number but a smaller British Airways B737-800 refuses to find a gate. Both Aircraft.cfg files are identical in terms of gate, heavy= and parking type etc. Ideally I want all my aircraft to board passengers in the usual way. Many of you know far more about these kind of things than I do as I relatively inexperienced by comparison. I would be extremely grateful to share your knowledge. Many thanks in advance.
March 12, 200620 yr Possibly you need better AFCAD files for the given airports, especially AFCADs with no errors and more parking. I found in the early days of FS9 that this made a big difference to the smoothness of AI operation. Errors in the AFCAD files often cause AI to disappear and re-appear as they can't taxi properly.Lee Lee H i9 13900KF 64GB Ram 24GB RTX 4090
March 12, 200620 yr Hi,My experience of AI pilots is not great, but I have had them fly over me on finals to get down first and into the canteen before it shuts. I would imagine Russian pilots to be especially bolshie in this regard as flying western airplanes would tend to give them airs and graces and as of course a culture of secrecy has existed in Russia for many, many years, there may be a worry about being reported to someone if a dodgy landing is made and therefore landings will not be made at the advertised times just in case another someone is watching. As for the other problem with the BA airplane the pilots may well be agency.Best of luck,Andy.
March 12, 200620 yr I only have a few seconds here so I'll at least try to give you some ideas...... You might check the radius settings for the aircraft and gates as the reason that your BA-737 does not find a gate. If you do not know about radius settings maybe someone else can jump in and help you, or I can come back later and guide you. The Project AI website can be a big help. The other responder may be right in that your AFCADs may be the problem but I would also check out if you have the Aeroflot flight set up to arrive at a specific time rather than just showing up when it shows up. I have heard that there can be problems when forcing an aircraft to show up at an airport at a specific time. Others should be able to help you with this also. Sorry I was not of more help but this at least might start you in the right direction.Take care and best of luck!Philip Olsonhttp://www.precisionmanuals.com/images/forum/supporter.jpg
March 12, 200620 yr this is probably the issuein the plans you used, what speed is in the aircraft.txt file? it should be 200, or less for props. there is a long complicated reason for this, but if it is higher than 200, and the @ sign is used in the plans, the aircraft almost always will not land, and will just appear at the destination
March 12, 200620 yr >It was due in at 17:55:30GMT and I started my flight>just before this at 17:50:00GMT. I waited patiently >in the Cessna for the Aeroflot to touchdown >from UUEE but it never arrived. >By 18:30:00 approx I gave up.You can't set a clock 5 minutes before the arrival time and expect the AI Plane to be on final and watch it land.FP' are based on arrival times into the Active AI visual zone of the airport. That can be 108 NM from the reference point.Always back your time up at least 30 minutes prior to arrival. FS9 has a 15 minute timing factor that FS2002 did not have and if your FP has a @ symbol, that is a Lee Swordy additional 15 minutes. These values are there to help give the AI a better chance of getting to the Gate at the specified arival time once it enters the AI Visual Zone. AI visual zone can be seen with many different utilities such as TrafficLook or the MSN TrafficToolbox.dll moduleOn your second issue about parking you must have the model.mdl radius set properly to the parking spot radius of the AFCAD airport so there is a place for the AI planes to go to.Everything in parking is about priorities, there are no exclusions. Radius is the primary decision in almost all parking decisions, followed by parking list order. What you see in the aircraft.cfg is at the very bottom of the priority list. You have to build AFCAD parking spots from the top down making sure model radius is set correctly in respect to parking spot radius.
March 12, 200620 yr Maybe you could post your flightplan and the line in the aircraft file, so we can have a look at it?I had a few similar problems with my ai, but I got most of them solved. Here are some possibilities:a) Your FS runway is too short for heavy landings. You could change the runway lenght with the AFCAD program. :( FS calculates the landing times without regard to the times you inserted, if you are not using the @ sign in your flightplans. If you do a decompilation of the specific traffic_xyz.bgl with ttools, you can see which times FS calculated as arrival time. This time may vary from manually specified arrival times. Your plane may even arrive after it is scheduled to take off - and you have got a conflict in your FS ai engine. This conflict does not provide a problem when you start FS once the plane should be at the gate, because FS simply tells the ai engine to put your plane at gate x at EFKH and then let it fly the respective flightplan beginning at that point of time.c) If you are using the @ sign in your flighhtplans_xyz.txt file (like in this fictitious one: UUEE,16:57:44,@17:55:30,320,F,3523,EFKH), you are forcing FS to use this special arrival time. Let's now say, your aircraft_xyz.txt file looks like this: AC#239,470,"AIA B763 Aeroflot NC". According to the aircraft cruise speed assigned to your plane and the way the FS ai engine works, your plane should arrive much too early at EFKH, which of course means a conflict for FS. This leads to your aircraft not showing up. Eventually, it may pop up at the gate without performing a touchdown before.Solution: Either remove the @ sign (which leads to different arrival times) or slow down your ai plane. I have seen 200 as recommended cruise speed, so it could look like this: AC#239,200,"AIA B763 Aeroflot NC". That way you keep your arrival times, but ai cruise speed is a bit unrealistic at higher altitudes.First thing you should do anyway is to decompile your traffic file to see what FS did to your arrival times. Don't forget to backup your original files before in a different folder.Hope this helps :)Regards from GermanyAlexPS: If anyone spots a mistake in my hastily written down thoughts, don't hesitate to correct it :)
March 13, 200620 yr I had the same problem in an scenery and I solved it changing from "user defined fixed" arrival time to "compiler calculated".Later on I saw that it could be a problem of the scenery itself ("La Palma 2005"), but then I had already solved that way.Actually the way to see the problem was to follow the plane from the approach (there's a very useful program called "Traffic View Board", but you can get more or less the same by pulsing CTRL-W until your plane appears) and I saw something made the aircraft land too late so it always went around. That was why I never saw my aircraft land, but if I weren't watching it land, I would go to the airport at the arrival time and it was always there. So if I were you I would try that; at least it's nearly exactly what happened to me.
March 13, 200620 yr Firstly, a big THANK YOU! to all for your interest and time taken. It is very much appreciated. Having read through all posts carefully and with a lot of problem elimination and experimentation I realised that there was no problem with the arrival and departure of any of the aircraft. I did undertake to update AFCADs for every airport listed in the flightplan before any further testing and then went on to add further aircraft and destinations.Last night I did a test on an EvolveAI British Airways Airbus A321CFM from EFHK > EGCC (Manchester). I had writtten a flightplan from scratch on a simple 24hr daily commute basis. First testing saw the aircraft depart from Helsinki and then I proceeded to Manchester to await it's arrival. It was due in at 20:50:19 and I sat there until 21:10 but did get to see it land. I could actually see it's lights flashing 10 minutes or so before touchdown as it was dark.By putting together the very helpful advice you have all offered and also by learning from my own testing I seem to have a much better understanding of the take off/'landing of AI aircraft. The issue of aircraft being assigned to gates is a little more confusing. I take the point regarding the aircraft radius and have noticed something of a pattern. Of the 18 aircraft, all the Boeing 767-300GE or PW will park at assigned gates. None of the EvolveAI Airbus A321 will park at gates and the AIA Boeing 737-800 (non winglet) models are mixed. Here's where I become completely lost....Of the same aircraft.cfg file I have an AIA KLM 737-800 that will always park ay its assigned gate but the AIA Malev Hungarian 737-800 refuses to do so and stays back timidly instead. The aircraft.cfg text is as good as identical excepting texture, atc id, registration etc. I also have 3 AIA Scandinavian SAS 737-800 that will all park at assigned gates too. I just wondered whether this is an issue to do with ATC parking codes???? For SAS I use SAS, KLM for KLM, AFR for Air France but I use MAH for Malev Hungarian that will not go to a gate. Will post the flightplans and aircraft.cfg in a few moments time. I'm confident that many of you will know what the problem is right away. Many thanks once again to all of you for your time and community spirit!Scratch1964

March 14, 200620 yr hello again, Scratch: I think it's a little difficult to analyse all your information, but if you have assigned the gates properly and there are enough of them for all your aircraft, it could be that the aircraft that don't get to the gate is because they have their access blocked to it, (by other planes, for example) or maybe there's not a proper link from the runway to the gate (I think this last issue you could try to solve it by the AFCAD "Fault Finder").Anyway, I can suggest you 2 things to try:1) Follow with CTRL-W the arrival and parking of one of the aircraft that don't get to the gate and see what problem they actually find2) Interchange AC# numbers in Aircraft.txt. (For example, AC#10 <--> AC#11). Then, if the problem is in the schedule of the flights, now the MALEV would probably get to the gate and not the KLM; if the problem is in the gate, you would probably find the same situation as before the change.
March 14, 200620 yr >>What I cannot understand is why, seemingly, the aircraft will not land when I am looking....LOL! It can be some aircraft are setup for a Touch n Go, then they land back at the airfield the flight originated at... Sometimes doing several TNG at a field. Their may be another problem, if someone created an AFCAD for the field, and the codes for parking are set for certain flights. It can mean there is no parking for the ones which disappear. Another possibility is the codes in AI aircraft, are not set to match the codes in your airfield. There is a program available which can be helpful called - Parking Manager.exe_________________Aircraft Parking Codes Manager final release V 1.6.This program will allow the user to modify their AI aircraft CFG and model to match the new standards for FS2004AI parking system. You can add the atc_parking_codes and atc_parking_types for any repaint in your FS2004 aircraft folderusing the same data set that uses AFCAD2 by Lee Swordy. Also you can modify the radius setting of your mdl files tomatch the Project Ai (www.projectai.com) parking standards. The parkingspecs.txt file differs from the original file from AFCAD2 because i added the military parking specs developed by projectAi. The civilian par its the same.___________________With this program you can make changes ao all AI aircraft, without having to load each individual aircraft CFG....
March 14, 200620 yr jacilore...Thanks for your input here. You are right about the AFCAD issues raised. The problem does indeed seem to be related more to AFCAD thatn anything else. Last night I tried every availabel AFCAD .BGL for EFHK found on AVSim and the difference in parking at the same time/date was quite astonishing. Almost to the point of not being able to recognise the airport. The default settings actually work best I find. With EFHK being a full add on scenery it has its own updated AFCAD and other AFCADs result in aircraft not lining up with the gates correctly. One reulted in the Cessna, at gate 24 (small) actually beginning half inside the terminal building. So yes, certainly the AFCADs make the biggest difference of all. Thanks too for suggesting the Ctrl + W (along with all other forum members who did the very same). WOW! What a difference. The very first time I used it I observed the EvolveAI Lufthansa A321 touchdown.I feel embarrassed to admit that I never knew about that. I have never looked into the keyboard shortcuts and tend to do everything from a Saitek joystick. Hence my outright ignorance.KINGAIR....Thanks to you too!You are quite right about the parking codes I beleive. I have no experience of changing either AFCAD or .mdl files around and therefore little confidence in dealing with these. Will vertainly check out the Airport Parking Codes Manager. Sounds like it's something I need.Certainly there is a lot to be said for AFCAD files. They may be invisible on the surface but they do make a huge difference to the workings of an airport. I must bear this in mind in future. Will go and check out my options and see what's available as well as looking into the radius settings for aircraft. Many thanks,Scratch1964
March 14, 200620 yr I told you to try the CTRL-W because it was the shortest way to tell you how to watch what happened with your traffic but if you want to see the real difference install "Traffic View Board" from avsim. For me it's one of the best ways to enjoy FS. (Actually, the CTRL-W, I found it by chance quite after I had this program, but here in FS you can't know everything!!)
