September 5, 200520 yr Hmm, interesting. I think that people just aren't used to hearing the whole story. ;) BobK
December 15, 200520 yr There is a storm moving in; and it is a virtual certainty no school around KABE all the way up to NYC. TOMMOROW!!! This is NOT due to "global warming" IMHO, but this is the first ice storm for years in an area especially prone to them. AND we may lose power; in an area (around KABE) where many homes including the one my Mom will be in have electric heat.Stay safeFLYing? It's cool. Trillions of birds and insects can't be wrong.
December 15, 200520 yr yes it is due to "global warming" and "the greenhouse effect" if you believe the alarmists. After all (they say when it suits them), global warming causes the earth to cool down. When it is unseasonably warm global warming causes the earth to heat up of course...
December 15, 200520 yr Yes, Jwenting, it's amusing- but then again; no it isn't. We need more people that think for themselves and I could care less if they agree as long as they do. You have a PM, different subject.Best Regards, Donny:-waveFLYing? It's cool. Trillions of birds and insects can't be wrong.
December 15, 200520 yr Of course your correct.Volcano's seem to cause our weather. That along with the Sun.They even can make life extinct.I caught an interesting program."Mini Ice Age" it was called. The most recent was from about the end of the Renaissance ,and lasted Thru to the late 1700S.With it came world wide problems in food production, and flooding due to the miserable weather, which lasted for many years.Prior to that ,the earth enjoyed great prosperity and progress, due to milder weather. I often wondered why "G.Washington" was always freezing his butt of. The Delaware crossing,Valley Forge,NY harbor frozen, and generally all thru the period in American history. The Indians in Canada, and upstate NY suffered much. Especially when Gen. Sullivan chased them out of the Finger Lakes region, they froze. This was a world wide condition however. All this is on record. Of course for many years now ,the NY harbor has not frozen. Trenton now enjoys a bit milder winters. The Delaware at that crossing I believe does not freeze. We are in a "natural" warming period.Man made?,debatable,it was claimed the Ozone area was manmade trouble also, and for years.Well its not. Better you worry about the Sun not Belching some day. Then we will all know how hot, hot, is, as the oceans will boil!and all of us gets "MICROED" For the Sun,"RA" as it was called,is the primary weather maker, and giver of life! But that subject about the "MINI ICE AGE" was fascinating! Worth looking it up! Ask any "NEANDERTHAL" VIN!
December 16, 200520 yr I read an article that reports the southern polar cap is shrinking - on Mars. Wow. Imagine our greenhouse gasses affecting Mars, too! This suggests "solar warming", as opposed to global warning.Yeah, I know - that's Bush's fault too. ;) BobK
December 16, 200520 yr I wish Bush would lay off the propaganda. IMHO, our sodiers in Iraq are not fighting for us that much. Rather, they are all Laffayettes doiung for Iraq what the French did for U.S. He can be his own worst enemy sometimes. That's got nothing to do with Global Warming, but it really is Bush'es fault. :9FLYing? It's cool. Trillions of birds and insects can't be wrong.
December 16, 200520 yr IT must be!! Makes sense to me!G.B.s fault!! Bob ,the real reason is what no one will allude to.Its not nice to say or imply it.Its got no etiquette, and besides its uncouth. Soo I'll say it,are we men here or what? Passing Da Gas!! We all do it,so do the vast herds of all the animals all over the world! With the tremendous increase in the worlds population, all eating, all flatuating, all that methane gas! floating off,Its gotta effect something! We ain't talking mice here, but elephants, rhino's cows,Buffalo's and all gods creatures including us. TAHTSA ALOTTA GASA! If only we could fuel our planes and cars with it.Just think,no more Jerry "cans",just your own ,properly positioned could give you power to move on.Al tho I'm sure with the high test variety,ya would really want to get on your way "Quickly". Sometimes in L.A.,that green haze with that peculiar oder, gives you pause.A lot of people there! Actually ,they have been taping landfills for years now. They do collect the gas. Just grow "Beans", and Recycle ,THATS IT!!Set up factories where this gas can be produced, collected, and containerized. Could put a Lotta people to work also, producing this most important commodity.!! Self sufficient, practicing environmental management, recycling solving the energy crises, and most importantly, putting people to work!! That would end global warming and solve the energy crises.I'll send this concept to G.B.,hey ,ya never know! Well,so much for a serous subject, back out in the hot sun, here in the bone yard, and do some serous research!! VIN :-sun1
December 16, 200520 yr You appear to be the one living in a cave...There is very broad and supportable evidence that not only is the globe warming, but that human activity is contributing in a signficant way. The last several decades have not only been the warmest in the last century, but are most likely the warmest in the last millenium. Two independent research teams, Two research teams, one led by the Scripps Institution for Oceanography and the other by NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies, reached the same conclusion - based on precise measurements of the accumulation of heat in the Earth's oceans, heat trapping pollution is the major cause of global warmingThe National Academy of Sciences, in a 2001 study requested by President Bush, found that emissions of carbon dioxide and other pollutants have already raised average worldwide temperatures by about 1 degree Fahrenheit over the last century. Twenty percent of the Arctic polar ice cap has melted since 1979 and at least half of the ice cap is projected to melt by the end of this century, along with a significant portion of the Greenland Ice Sheet.
December 16, 200520 yr There is in fact NO such evidence. There is evidence the world is currently in an unstable climate phase with temperatures which seem to be rising on a short term basis (but not on a longterm basis). There is no indication that anything humans do has any significant influence on that climate. And no, unlike what the global warming alarmists and their environmentalist backers/funders would have us do, we're not living in caves. The last several decades have NOT been the warmest in a thousand years, that's pure unadulterated treehugger propaganda.Your vaunted "hockystick" model if fundamentally flawed, and should never have been admitted as viable data. The entire IPCC report states as much, all of it except the "executive summary" in fact. Of course the entire report except that summary (which btw was written by environmentalists and politicians, not scientists, people who had no clue as to the true meaning of the document) was the only thing that was ever used to define international policy with the result that the EU and a lot of other nations signed the economic suicide pact called the Kyoto protocol which will have no effect on worldwide climates at all but will mean economic destruction in Europe, parts of Asia, and Australia unless politicians wake up and stop destroying our nations for a pipedream.Wake up to the real world, a world where climates change on their own without anything (and often despite) humans can do.We're currently in the later stages of a long interglacial period (the most stable parts of the earth's climate cycles are glacials, with most of the northern hemisphere covered by a very thick sheet of ice and snow), periods which historically are known to have a highly unstable climate where temperatures can vary by a dozen degrees or more over a period of a few decades or centuries. The entire theoretical "human caused global warming" is 1.5 degrees over a period of several centuries. That's less than the natural change by a factor 10, and less than the inaccuracy in establishing the figure by a factor 2. In other words the entire figure is completely bogus!
December 16, 200520 yr Keep on believing what you want to believe. After all, global warming is "only a theory" isn't it? It's far better to rely on one's beliefs to determine what is or isn't happening. There is broad scientific consensus that global warming is occurring and that human activity is a signficant contribution. Even the Bush Administration (other than a few stalwart non-believers) agree. The debate is not over whether global warming is occurring, nor even that human activity is contributing, but over what to do about it.Nearly all of the rest of the world is moving forward on this issue. The U.S. is the biggest laggard, but that should change in about, say, three years.
December 16, 200520 yr If oil is taxed and the money is funneled to preparation for what *will* happen, I won't complain a bit.Best Regards, Donny:-waveFLYing? It's cool. Trillions of birds and insects can't be wrong.
December 16, 200520 yr There is no "consensus" about the human "significant contribution", except under extremist environmentalists and politicians.Nowhere do I say there is no changing climate, there is. But to think that human action is causing it and that without us the climate would be eternally stable at some sort of divine perfect point it so completely insane and speaks of such massive egocentrism that it's impossible to consider how people can be so stupid as to believe it.
December 16, 200520 yr >Nearly all of the rest of the world is moving forward on this>issue. The U.S. is the biggest laggard, but that should>change in about, say, three years.Yeah, right - and to date, not one developed country that signed the Accord has met it's commitment. How is that the ice pack on Mars is shrinking? Did Bush send a greenhouse gas generator in the Mars Rover? BobK BobK
December 16, 200520 yr The theory has one or two sticky points for me:Cloud cover would stabilise tempratures. Yes, the sun's effect during the day would be reduced, but the clouds would insulte the land during the night. Cold air cannot retain much moisture. If the air cooled, then the relative humidity would fall...i.e. it would have to rain before the temprature reduced significantly so the concept of moisture locked in the atmosphere doesn't ring true. Think about it this way, the poles are in a predominantly high pressure region. That means descending air which means little or no cloud most of the time. The sun is already as strong as it can be over the poles. What is damaging is the loss of the ozone layer and the build up of CO2. That will raise the pole temps and melt the ice.The big problem is that if the ice melts, the salinity of the oceans changes. Salt acutally is the biggest influence on where currents are directed. If the sea is diluted with freshly melted ice, then the currents will almost certainly shift. I don't think anybody can be sure how. Also, we gotta get over this thing with oil. It is about time alternative engines were developed, the combustion engine is long past its sell by date IMHO. They are fun, are IMHO inhibiting progress. The aero engine needs a re-think too, too noisy, and too thirsty - plus it is bugger all use in space where long-haul travel needs to be in the not too distant future too.The lack of oil is an opportunity for several reasons. Two of which are:1) We need an economic boost. The development and deployment of new types of engine and a non-oil burning infrastructure will be a huge wealth creation scheme for many people and ticket to future security for millions.2) It is an opportunity for the developed western nations to keep ahead of the up and comming manufacturing countries like China.3) We need better lives, less noise, less polution, more reliability, cheaper travel. All these things will be possibable once get over combustion engine cold turkey. In summary, oil is running out. Not only that be the remaining reserves are in the wrong hands. It really doesn't matter a fig about Kyoto or Canada or any of the conventions. Those who plan now, are those who will lead in the future. Those who hang on and fear change will loose much more.
