How to proper use the Air foil anti icing system ?

I turned on Air foil anti icing during flight, only to get both "AIRFL ICE Press ABNLM", "L ICE PROT TEMP LOW" and "R ICE PROT TEMP LOW".

I tried to both open and close the PNEU-X Valves, but still got the warnings.

Both Pneumatic Crossfeed Valve levers should be set to open (up) before activating airfoil anti icing. If they are in the closed (down) position, you will definitely get these warnings, since with the valves closed no air can reach the wing anti-ice ducts.

 If you have no failures enabled, the messages you saw could be caused by the engine power being set too low. If you were in an idle-power descent, the 13th stage engine bleed air system might not be able to supply enough heated air to the leading edges. If this happens in the real aircraft, you would probably have to increase power - which (if you are in descent), might require you to pitch up to reduce your descent rate, to prevent your airspeed from building up too high.

Jim's answer is spot on. 

You can also refer to the procedure in the documentation we provided. I realize it's in bit cumbersome to get to (unless you add a shortcut to the documents section itself). To get to the procedure:

Open the "Fly the Maddog X Operations Manual"

Select Volume 2 (actually says "2 Volume")

Select (click on) the text which says "Chapter 2" (Checklists)

Either search (Control-F) for "Ice", or go directly to Ppage 33.

Helpful Hints:

1. You can search all the PDF documents in a particular folder by opening one of the documents, pressing Control-Shift-F and entering your search term. This will help you locate information across all the documents we provided.

2. Volume 2 also contains amplified information for the "Fly the Maddog X Normal Checklist" and using both in conjunction with one another is a terrific learning technique.

When you first turn it on, you will get the warnings.  The real plane does it as well.  JR is correct with all the items he pointed out.  I recollect when you get AIRFOIL ICE ABNORMAL it's probably telling you the pneumatic xbleeds are closed.

The plane takes about 5-10 seconds to get the air heated to cancel the warnings or maintain at least 1.10-1.12 EPR.

I guess my issue was that for som part of my flight the PNEU-X valves here closed and when I finally got them open I was starting my descend at idle power.

 

Would it be realistic to turn the APU on for supplementing air to the anti icing system ?

No. The APU gives you only an electrical backup during heavy weather conditions after Engine start. Both engines gives you enough warm air for Air Foil and Engine AI. You should use Air foil ai only after takeoff, not on ground. The abnormal Warning is normal and should diseappear after 60 sconds latest (Pneu x-feed open BEFORE you set the switch to on).

You can also bump up one throttle if you are concerned with speed increasing while descending.
