Upgrading from W7 to W10.

Since Aerosoft just has announced that their new BUS was tested in W10 environment and no support is planned for W7, I'd like to upgrade OS, but to keep my existing P3Dv4.1 installation at the same time. A few questions I have before I proceed.

1. I have stable W7-PRO installation on a custom-build PC. If I buy W10 Pro from MS website, may I install W10 over existing W7 installation OR should I wipe W7 out first and then start installing W10 from the scratch (and obviously P3D as well).

2. Should I update MB, sound and video drivers myself OR W10 will automatically do all the updates for me? 

3. Is there any FAQ that helps to improve W10/P3D peaceful coexistence as I have read a bunch of negative reports regarding P3D performance within W10 environment.

Just install the addon on your current Win7 install and be done with it.  Your life could be made miserable over the next few months by going cold turkey to Win10.

But if you insist ....if it were me: I'd by another HDD and install Win10 on that with a new copy of P3d and slowly migrate over to Win10

Hi,

I personally made the transition from W7 to W10 in January 2018 and I am very happy. W10 rocks and I made it look like W7 using some customization tools from StarDock.

I made a new fresh install and reinstalled all my programs afterwards (Finally it is not so difficult, just to make this carefully and provided you have all your software install files with keys ready to be installed).

Doing that, I installed a NVME SSD for the system and it was very simple with W10.

So, I suggest making a fresh install instead of an update. You will have all things properly installed with no problems and all programs will also be in a very good state.

And if you are not sure, you can make a backup of your existing W7 system (using free Macrium Reflect backup software for instance)

Regarding drivers, W10 installation normally makes all things automatically, but if you want the latest drivers, you can make updates after that (specially the display driver)

About performance, I did not see any difference with w7.

So, what you're saying is that W10 will automatically pick up drivers for Mobo, Sound etc?

Hi Dmitriy,

Yes, it will if you are running current and of-the-shelf hardware. If you would happen to have any very specific adapter card in your PC (I don't know, let's say a TV card or a special RAID controller card, for instance) then it would be a good idea to check upfront if vendor drivers exist and if they are compatible with Win 10.

When I did my first "migration" to Windows 10 I did it like FunknNasty said - I got a new SSD, put it into my PC and let Windows 10 do a fresh install. I would not recommend an installation over Windows 7. Too many downstream issues may result from improperly migrated settings.

That does not mean the Airbus will not work in a computer with W7. It should be other reasons to upgrade. At the end, everybody will have to, but not due to Aerosoft, of course.

After installing W10, I checked on the MB manufacturer web site, for the latest drivers related to the MB and W10 and installed them (SATA, USB, ME, even the BIOS etc.), but this is not mandatory.

For example, If you install a NVME SSD from Samsung, it is better to install the Samsung drivers, as W10 will install some drivers (that run OK), but not the optimal ones.

Oh yes indeedy.  It will do all that...including auto-installing new drivers that have bugs that break P3D and other content. 

Were it me, I'd try it first on my Win 7 install, where it is likely to work just fine without the massive butt pain of a rebuild and then forever dealing with Win 10's intrusive nannybot, which has repeatedly broken my flight sim system with bad drivers via forced updates, security update bugs that broke software and made mass changes to file system permissions that were not reversed by the rollback process.

Hi Folks,

My only suggestion - is never perform the Win7 to Win10 "upgrade" - having tried it on three machines - each time I had to go back do a clean install of Win10 to achieve a stable functioning system...
