Spitfire Sweep - SATURDAY 11th August

Featured Replies

Spitfire Sweep

Take off from RAF Manston with a scramble to Angels 20 (climb to 20,000 in 9 minutes or less) without blowing up your engine, then a 90 mile dash across the sea to Holland landing at Midden-Zeeland (EHMZ).  Departing to the northeast we conduct a low level high speed run over the Rhine–Meuse–Scheldt delta and Rottedam then a quick stop at Hilversum (EHHV) with it’s shortish 2000 foot grass runway. A quick departure will minimize overheating as we continue the low level 41nm run to Noordoostpolder (EH09) with a 3000 foot grass runway. The high speed run continues on to Eelde (EHGG) and hard runway (8190 ft).  After a brief stop to run maintenance checks, top off fuel, fluids, and consumables, we change direction and head due west across the Waddenzee to Texel (EHTX) our last stop in Holland. Take off from Texel for our second scramble to Angels 20 (see if you can improve your time) for the final return leg across the North Sea to East Anglia where we will land at Norwich (EGSH) previously known as RAF Horsham St Faith.  In 1940 two Spitfire Squadrons (19 & 66) were based in Horsham St Faith.

Flight Plan is here

A lively discussion on how to achieve maximum climb to 20,000 feet in the Spitfire occurred back in 2016 on the A2A forums.  It’s worth reading.  I found Killratio’s posts very helpful.

Aircraft
While the Spitfire is the plane of choice, the default P3D P-38 will work if you don’t have the Spit but want to fly along in a warbird. If these options don’t appeal, choose something pretty fast (250-300 knts) but as always you are free to fly what you like.

Too busy practicing my climbs to 20,000ft to reply! 😛

Another super flight. Shame Josh had problems but Roger came through and has been promoted to Flying Officer on account of his final airport landing performance. Nice one. (that sounds a bit patronising.)
