August 18, 200619 yr Hey, all...Just got FS9 last week after downloading the FSX demo. I couldn't wait to start learning how to (sim)fly so I'll play 2004 until the new one comes out.Anyways; I'm just now getting into the VOR navigation lessons, and it all pretty much makes sense to me...except that my to/from "flag" always displays a red and white flag rather than a to/from arrow when I'm chasing radials - and not just when I'm right over the station. Rod Machado is trying to draw my attention to the fact that my indicator is pointing up, and I'm thinking that Rod must be in the wrong plane. Is there something I'm supposed to be activating to enable that function? (btw, I'm flying the Cessna Skyhawk, if that makes a difference, instrumentation-wise)Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks, - Will
August 19, 200619 yr I haven't done the lessons, but the first things I'd check are that the avionics are on, the right frequency is tuned in, and it's in the "active" part of the display and not the "standby" part (there's a little flip-flop button - you tune a frequency in standby and then "flip" it to make it active).Have fun with FS9!

August 19, 200619 yr I'm with Jeremy, sounds like you are not receiving. That is the point of the barberpole flag. Avoinics correctly tuned?
August 19, 200619 yr Author How far are you from the VOR station? And also make sure you are not in the zone of ambiguity. i.e directly at degrees of your course.you may want to check this as well. Its a great VOR trainer.http://roye.home.netcom.com/flighttraining/VOR.htm Manny Beta tester for SIMStarter
August 19, 200619 yr Nice, thats a neat little program. Thanks for the link.I may have to be patient and wait until further into the instrument rating lessons. The private pilot lessons are fairly rudimentary, it seems. They don't really break down a lot of the instrumentation; it's more or less done for you. Rod dials in all the headings and frequencies for you and sets you to flying. That's about it.One point of confusion for me, though: there are two VOR dials, right? One for NAV 1 and one for NAV 2? I notice that the needles and such vary between the VOR 1 and 2, and want to be sure it's the top dial I should be paying attention to?Again, I know this may vary between planes, so to clarify this is in the newbie cessna.
August 20, 200619 yr In normal flying, you can select two VORs, one with NAV1 and one with NAV2.The two VOR indicators show the directions to the two VORs you have tuned and can be used together to determine your position.Typically, you would have NAV1 tuned to the VOR you are flying towards and NAV2 tuned to either a VOR you are flying past, or to the next VOR you will be flying towards after you pass VOR1.
