Problem with "jumps" with water animation

Dear everybody,

A long time ago (in fact since I started using FSX, 10 years ago) I began to notice that water animation had a strange behaviour. Water animation "jumps" very 20 seconds. It´s like a stuttering or flickering but repetitive in time... It´s as if the water animation showed a picture at the beggining of the sequence and at the end as the picture is not the same it seems like "it jumped". I have been trying to determine the reason why this happens, but with any result: restoring fsx.cfg, coming back to NVIDIA Inspector original configuration, uninstalling Ultimate Terrain X / Ground Environment X, installing Bojote´s shader mod 3 (and its waterconstants.xml file) and clearing the shaders cache, flying in another different water location... It´s really exasperating because in another computer where I have another FSX just for tests (with only FSX and some planes and airports installed) water doesn´t jump! Does somebody know which could be the reason?

I had the same situation around 9 years ago that you have now. It happened to me when I first install either REX or FEX HD water textures. It was like every 15 seconds or so the whole water animation sequence would pause and reset to start over again.

I think the defaul water textures are 512x512 and the ones I installed were either 2048 or 4096. Anyway, I resized the HD textures back to 512x512 and it fixed the water jumping effect for me. I assumed that the larger textures where just too memory hungry and caused the issue. 

If you’re not using aftermarket or larger water sized textures then it might be something else.

Well if you haven’t installed REX or any other texture programs that change the water textures then it’s probabyl something else.

Im not at my computer but from memory I think the water textures are in the Scenery/World/Texture folder. They have file names that have the word water in them.

In your FSX/Settings how far right do you have the slider for water?

I have this slider at High 2.x, the minimum recommended by people precisely to avoid stutters...

Try low 2.x and see if there is any difference.  The water settings have great affect on CPU usage and frame rates.

I have tried all of the positions for that slide, and the result is the same (well, it doesn't make sense for the lowest positions because water shows as a "plain" blue colour and without any effect...). Very strange as I said...

The file implied in water texture is:

/FSX/Texture/OceanHeight20FieldLayer.dds

Without this file there is no water.

I have changed by another files available on the Internet, but no good result... Water keeps jumping every 20 seconds.

So I think that the problem is not in the texture itself, but in the way FSX operates.

I don’t think the problem is necessarily FSX itself otherwise I’d still have the problem and many others would be reporting the same issues. I’d wager that it’s either a setting issue with you install, something specific to you machine or any number of other things.

You might want to try clearing the shader cache and letting FSX rebuild the shaders. That might fix the issue for you.

Without having a physical look at your settings (both FSX and OS), it’s a bit more difficult to diagnose over the net.

Yes, I was referring to my computer, not in general of course. In fact I have a second FSX to make tests in another computer and it doesn't have this issue. I have tried to pass some texture and configuration files from one to another with any good result.

I have cleared my shader cache thousands of times, because I have replaced a lot of texture files and every time I did it I had my shader cache cleared. This has not been succesful either...

I will make screenshots of my configuration later.

Under [Terrain]  Bump the LOD_Radius= to 4.5  This is default.

I have tried up to LOD_RADIUS=8.5. Anything about this parameter improves water jumping...

No, moving the LOD higher than 4.5 is going to put more strain on the system and probably make things worse overall as far a performance.

The water slider you have now set at High 2x,  I’d move it left to the middle which I believe is  Low 2x. That’s where I always keep my water setting as it takes less shader passes to render the water. Try Low 2x and see how that works. Also try setting your Texture Max Load back to 1024.

I have changed:

-Water slider to Low 2.x

-LOD_RADIUS=4.5

-TEXTURE_MAX_LOAD=1024

This hasn´t solved the problem.

As an extra information, the frequency of jumps depends on the velocity of the plane. If I fly an FSX glider I hardly notice any jumps, if I fly FSX Cessna I have a jump every 1 minute or more, if I fly PMDG B737 NGX I have a jump every 20 seconds...

You know, after looking closer at your cfg, you have a lot of tweaks in it that I don’t even use and one id never even seen like MAX_TEXTURE_DATA=4800, multiple sample pass values and other weird stuff. If I were you I’d make a back up if the cfg, start FSX and let it build a new one without all those tweaks, some of which might be making things worse. Adjust your settings in the FSX menu and only add the highmemfix tweak to your cfg and retest. You can always go back in and add all those other additions but in the 9 years I’ve been on FSX, I’ve never used any of that stuff and haven’t found it necessary.

Yes, I agree, MAX_TEXTURE_DATA=4800 is weird, but it´s the result of the calculation:

MAX_TEXTURE_DATA  = GPU Memory clock (MHz) * 24 / UPPER_FRAMERATE_LIMIT = 6000 * 24 / 30 = 4800

Can I safely assume that by jumping you mean that it is skipping by graphic info that should be shown.  Any chance you could do a FRAPS video of what you are seeing?

When I say "jumping" I mean that it seems as if water was really composed of two textures, and these textures alternates every certain period of time (20 seconds in case of PMDG 7373 NGX, but slower if flying a glider or a Cessna for example), so you notice a little "jump".

I have read on the Internet that this was a common problem with FS9, but little information for FSX.

In that case it might just be something you’ll have to live with and just try to ignore it as frustrating as it might be. I was lucky to solve mine but without being a your rig to really dig into it, it’s hard to say what you’ve got going on.
