Well, then I must not have SODE installed.  But I think I do -- I have a bunch of add-on sceneries like FSDT KMEM, and I think at least one of them installed SODE for me (right?).

It should be really simple to check... Control Panel/Programs/Programs and Features/SimObject Display Engine

If you don't see it there, then you don't have it installed...

If you do have it installed, make sure you have it registered and activated it in the SODE Platform Manager.

I’ve got the 2015 version and thought it was ok, but agreed on the standards of today. We are seeing incredible quality on scenery and planes these days.

So buy the alternative.  Hmmmm!  Would that be the free default?

Determine how often you will fly into and depart from, and factor that against the price for the scenery.  In terms of value that is the essence of the question.  KMCI at one time was a hub for TWA. Did that end in what? 1978?  Forty years ago.  So fly over the default, or justify the meager price for the add-on. What takes you there more often to justify another argument?

You shouldn't need GSX2 for jetway animations to work.  If you bring up the GSX (1 or 2) menu, the "operate jetways" should trigger the SODE jetways included in the scenery.  Of course that won't work if you don't have SODE installed.

Again, Bob, bang on the button. That is precisely the way I do it too and never fails to bring the jetway to the plane door.

Given the low cost, i'd say that the TropicalSim KMCI scenery is easily worth the price of admission, especially when you consider that the default P3D KMCI is pretty bad, but for anyone who doesn't want a payware version, and might like something better than the default scenery, there is a decent freeware scenery available in the AVSIM library....
