ASI change

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I asked a couple of years ago if anyone has the old ASI mod that changes the indicator in the lotus l-39 from KPH to KTS - first, does anyone have it?

Second, and assuming not, does anyone have any tips for me if I was thinking of creating one myself?

Thanks,

James

Just looked at it, there is no way to change the actual needle to respond to knots.
It is hard coded in the interior .mdl with a bunch custom failures involved.

What you could do is modify the texture in the following files so the "kph" needle points to a recalculated set of tick marks, in knots, on the ASI -

1 kph = 0.539957 kts

SimObjects\Airplanes\Lotus L-39\texture\

What would a CDI (course direction indicator) have to do with and ASI (airspeed indicator)?

Just going to run a Chromebook and not upgrade to a Windows computer. Too many problems with the new Sims! 😱
Trying to keep peace and harmony and the will of Landru on the site seems to be a full time job!

Ok, looks like I'll have to edit the image - sorry for such a simple question, but what software should I use to edit it?

DXTBmp will do it for you.

Make a backup.
A basic set of instructions.

  1. Load .dds image in DXTBmp, drag file over, or,  Menu - FILE | OPEN
  2. Menu - IMAGE | FLIP IMAGE
  3. Menu - IMAGE | SEND TO EDITOR (make sure preferred editor is set in Menu - PREFS | SELECT EDITOR)
  4. Edit the image in your image editor as wanted, save. Note - your editor is "locked" to DXTBmp at this point, do not close your editor until image is saved and image is reloaded (step #5).
  5. Menu - IMAGE | RELOAD AFTER EDIT
  6. Menu - IMAGE | FLIP IMAGE
  7. Menu - FILE | SAVE AS | DDS TEXTURE | Save as type: = DDS DXT5

It may take a few tries to get the workflow down, once understood it will become second nature.
I would help but my artistic skills are 💩

Ok so I managed to do a little tinkering and came up with something I'm reasonably happy with. I tested it up to 600kts (well beyond the red line!) and it all seems to match up pretty well.

I've uploaded it to the file library, though I'm not entirely sure how to link it here..

Tried to upload but apparently it needs a readme - so will try again.

Interestingly I looked at a bunch of real world L-39 panels that have been exported to the West. Many of them seem to have done exactly as I have -used the existing ASI but covered the readings in KPH and re-painted with KTS. It was interesting as it seems that the acceleration isn't liniar, so at first look it seems that the '10' increments have odd spacing.

Will update here when its uploaded in case anyone else would like it.
