Roads in FSX

Featured Replies

This is one for the developers I guess. FS9 has 180000 roads, FS10 has 24000000 roads. How many of them are outside of the US? Obviously I expect the developed world to have more coverage due to better maps and whathaveyou. Is someone willing to pick any country outside the US at random and tell us how many extra roads there are there? Personally I'm most interested in the Greek islands, and I'm waiting interestedly to see how much extra detail there is, seeing as good maps don't exist, although the roads in FS9, although lacking in detail (to me at least, but then I go there a couple of times every year) are roughly in the right places. Hmm, I may be just someone else who wants something that sounds easy until you try to implement it...Chris

Personally, I'm hoping that the new roads will be similar to what USA Roads or Ultimate Terrain has. I dont see why they wouldnt be... or at least the major roads portion of those packages.

I'd be interested to see if all of the UK's dual carriageways (that includes motorways too btw, anything with central reservation or median as the US insist on calling it) are actually present and correct. I seem to remember that around EGNX the M1 was seriously out and possibly missing in parts! (For non-Brits the M1 is one of the countries busiest roads and regulary carries 80,000 cars a day on any section).

MS are citing that the roads will be accurate. I guess we'll have to wait and see. And wait to see if they remembered we drive on the correct side of the road..... ;)

In that case everybody will drive on the Right, easier for them I guess.....1/ USA - I rest my case, since this will almost certainly include Canada2/ Europe, will include GB, so we'll be on the right 3/ Asia - will almost certainly include Japan, so they will drive on the erm... Oh yeah that'd be right.Only one who may not by that token will be the Aussies who may still get to drive on the side they do IRLbtw don't take this too seriously it's meant to be tongue firmly in cheek.

As mentioned by the devs, FSX is using Microsoft MapPoint data, so if it's shown on MapPoint for your local country/area, then I guess it may make it in there?

>As mentioned by the devs, FSX is using Microsoft MapPoint>data, so if it's shown on MapPoint for your local>country/area, then I guess it may make it in there? That's an interesting thought. Also, then, I wonder if land types will be based on coverage shown in MapPoint, and if FS' roads/land use can be updated from a MapPoint server? (!)One thing, though.... I notice Jamaica isn't in the MapPoint coverage. In fact, I can't seem to find a good map of Jamaica. I like Jamaica...---Andrew

One thing i wish FSX will do is "smooth" out corners in roads and coast lines. For example, if the road (or coastline) bends at an angle 100 degrees or more then instead of a "sharp" bend smooth it out a little. IMHO this would make roads and coastlines look far more natural.Or maybe put this ability into the SDK so that can be a scenery developer can smooth out roads and coastlines.

I hope the roads in FSX will "blend" into the landscape a little better. From the screenshots ive seen (and in FS9) roads really stand out too much.

(!)We are using some of the same data sources used by Mappoint, as filtered by the Mappoint team. You will not see a one to one representation of Mappoint data in FSX.The land usage stuff is not really transferable, so... no.Cheers, jason
