April 9, 20197 yr Commercial Member Just on the topic of software vs hardware and the prices associated with it.... Lets take SpaceX and orbital rockets for example. The huge cost associated with satellites and rockets isn't the fuel, nor is it the raw materials involved. Elon Musk says fuel is about 3% of launch costs. Raw materials also make up a small fraction. The huge cost is time. Man hours. It takes a mass of engineers a considerable amount of combined time to build one of those machines, write the code for it, test it, and get it certified. Software development, whether scenery or aircraft, same rule applies. If developer has to pay a full time artist or programmer say $2000 a month for 2 years, the total cost for just that one member of the team for that project is going to be $48000. If you have 2 or more full time team members who are involved for the same amount of time, that's going to multiply the cost well into the 6 figure range. In hardware development, the raw materials are a small percentage of the cost. You are paying for the manhours of R&D&P. So the claim that software is a totally different situation to hardware has more holes in it than a sieve.
