August 2, 20196 yr The Learning Center documentation is thorough and complete; however, if you need to simplify then get the Lorby Addon Organizer. It is a good tool that does all the work for you and you never need to learn how yourself. Dan Downs KCRP

August 3, 20196 yr Commercial Member Quote How can I install add ons outside of P3Dv4? HI, in a way this is the wrong question, you can install anything anywhere. How and where you install your addons is up to you. The trick is letting the simulator know where they are. In the old days you would edit a couple of .cfg files (scenery.cfg, fsx.cfg etc.) to tell the simulator where to look for assets. Since P3D V3 you are supposed to create "Addon Packages", which are special XML files called "add-on.xml", for that purpose. And that last part is what the P4AO tool is for. (this may sound like splitting hairs, but I get asked a lot about how P4AO helps you install things - it doesn't, and it can't "move" addons that are already installed into the sim folders either). How many of those XML files you create - how you organize your addons - is up to you. If you add all legacy aircraft of a certain developer to the same XML, all sceneries of a certain contient to another XML, if you create a single XML file for every single addon - that is a decision that you have to make. The earlier you commit to a certain organizational structure, the better. Modern addons that were made for P3D V4 should install outside of the core folders already. There are exceptions, but in many cases the effort to work around this is too great to bother with moving them. So your question is mostly relevant for legacy addons from the FSX days. https://www.avsim.com/forums/topic/534107-p4ao-how-to-add-legacy-scenery/ https://www.avsim.com/forums/topic/554899-addon-xml-method-for-aircraft/ Best regards Edited August 3, 20196 yr by Lorby_SI LORBY-SI

I'm going to try with a simple add on. Could you tell me that add ons are not compatible with this program? On the other hand, can add ons installed outside P3Dv4 be updated? if p3d is updated what should I do? Thanks Regards Edited August 3, 20196 yr by E69_Brisafresca

P4AO will link anything and everything to the sim. Figuring out if an addon can be installed outside of the sim, and how to do that, is up to you (and the developer of the addon, but that is another story). 2. Only if the installer of that addon lets you install it outside of the sim, so an updater program knows where to look for it. If you install an addon in the default location and then move it, the installer/uninstaller/update cannot find it anymore. In my example thread that I linked above I explain the proper method. 3. Nothing. That is the whole point about installing addons outside of the sim core folders. Best regards Edited August 3, 20196 yr by Lorby_SI LORBY-SI

If you install an addon in the default location and then move it, the installer/uninstaller/update cannot find it anymore. In my example thread that I linked above I explain the proper method. The option I've used in the case of addons that install in the P3D directory, and that have updater functionality, is to use symbolic link to move them where I want them. An example is Flightbeam products that install in P3D\Flightbeam. I just move the entire Flightbeam directory where I want it and create a symbolic link in the P3D directory. Using this technique, Flightbeam Manager sees it's addons as being installed in the P3D directory, even thought the assets exist where I've placed them.
