PC strugling with pretty modest system

Featured Replies

Hello everyone,

The last months my pc really struggled with running XP11 and P3D. I have a prety good system, and hoped to get about 30 fps when I built it, but that wasn't the case. I get about 18 to 22 frames per second in XP, and some more in P3D. In XP I am suffering from a lot of stutters, with pretty low fps at cruise, and in P3D I got some crashes because of the Kernel DDL problem, and sometimes the screen flickered. When reinstalling XP I didn't get the 40+ fps like everyone with a system like mine, but a really stuttery 22 fps with vanilla installation at KSEA in a Cessna. I P3d this was way better, but it also feels very unstable. I really didn't know what to do, and after a lot of seaching I found that the GPU is the most used part in this games, and with a better GPU your fps will also be better. My system was:

AMD Ryzen 5 1600

Asrock A320M-DGS

GeForce GTX 1060 3GB OC

Ram  2x8 GB Crucial DDR4

PSU Corsair VS450

2x2 TB Seagate Barracuda

Windows 10

So, yesterday I bought the 1660 TI, but I had a problem. My performace hadn't inproved with 1 fps! I have the feeling that I did something wrong, but I have no clue what. I uninstalled the previous driver and installed the new one, but this didn't worked. I had the feeling all the time that before upgrading that GPU, my system was suffering because an unknown reason. I thought the graphicscard was the problem, but this didn't make a difference at all (but on paper it is significantly better). Do you guys think I have a some kind of a software problem, or is there something else that stops me from a smooth gameplay? I get a lot of stutters, and almost never higher than 25 fps (even at cruise, but It can be less than 20). I really hope you know a solution, because even with my brand new card I keep getting stutters... Please help!

Regards, Jelle

You're not lying when you say modest system.  That's a pretty weak rig IMO.  The video ram isn't helping you on XP11 and the CPU is a big issue for p3d and xp11.  I'd say the CPU is the primary issue.  Even though both p3d and XP utilize more threads , they are both still very reliant on a powerful core 0, or single thread.  Can you overclock that thing at all?  That would really help!

It isn't a OC varient sadly... But im a bit affraigt that when I buy a new processor that this also won't help on frames, and I have a small budget...

Can you post your XP11 settings?  That Ryzen cpu is great in benchmarks because of 6 cores.  But in single threaded apps like p3d and xp11 it's not going to be great.  Intel almost always wins for our simming/practical use.

Also what screen resolution do you run?

The ryzen 5 1600 3.2 ghz base clock is a bit low for single threaded apps like flight sim, you should aim for 4ghz and above base clock.

I don't know a lot of computers, but I use a standerd Philips 60 HZ monitor, the 243V7QDAB variant. In XP I use medium settings, with Texture Quality on medium (High has a lot more stutters...), world objects to high, Visual effects also on high. I tried a lot of those settings, with minimal impact

What you getting with all settings to minimum?

thats the best it’s going to get.

now look on screen and decide what stands out the most that you don’t like the look of.

adjust setting to find a trade off for acceptable performance Vs visual display.

your up the creek without a paddle I’m afraid, as your so limited by your processor

Can you please explain why this processor isn't good? I mean, I dont know anything about it, but I thought that a lot of cores is better...

What would be the best choice to do now? Would you guys return the card, or save up for a new CPU? Im not sure, but I think my current motherboard doesn't support Intel, so its gonna be a very expensive upgrade, and I'm limited in budget. Any ideas? Maybe a secondhand processor?

I would check with your motherboard manufacturer and see if your board will support the new Ryzen 3x00 series chips. If so, that would be the best route IMHO. You will probably need a BIOS update to recognize the new chip. As far as number of cores goes, the general consensus is core clock speed is much more important than number of cores (when at 4 cores or more).

Ok, so the best thimg to do is to upgrade the processor to a NG AMD Ryzen, with a as high as possible clock speed. Is the Ryzen 5 3600 for example a good one for P3D or XP? I dont know anything about singel tread performance but I see that it had a higher GHZ

First, delete your preferences - that's the golden rule in X-Plane  https://forum.aerosoft.com/index.php?/topic/104414-reset-the-x-plane-1011-preferences/

You can keep the joystick and flight logs, but delete the x-plane.prf at least, then restart and see what improvments show.

I would go with a 3600X -- see https://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/AMD-Ryzen-5-3600X-vs-AMD-Ryzen-5-1600/4041vs3919

So if I upgrade my CPU u guys are sure that that the problem is with my horrible low FPS, and that it will be a lot better? Because I thought the same thing when I bought my GPU...
