RC4 user trying to come to terms with P2ATC Trial

Featured Replies

Hi Dave,

Re: P3Dv4.5

I've noted your enthusiasm here over the years and I'm intrigued...

I downloaded your trial this weekend and it's a bit daunting... I haven't found any hand holding tutorials to walk me through initial configs and first flight...

I was able to power through a VFR Flight - a few issues came up - I get the flight planning part...

First off - I maxed the volume in the "config" for all the voices and I turned down my P3D sounds - I can barely hear the voices and had to read them from the dialog box... I am using a high quality headset - is there a way to make them loud enough to hear ? I truly can't hear the ATC...

Should I turn off the P3D ATC and will P2ATC then interact with all the AI as well ?

Is there radio chatter for filler ?

Is ATC terrain aware (RC4 would often fly you into a mountain if you didn't opt out of ATC altitude control) ?

Are those high quality Cereproc voices now working - I thought I noted some posts where they had issues...

Thanks...

Regards,
Scott

Scott,

Thanks for trying out the program.  There is a Quick Start tutorial on the Tutorials page of the web sit that focusses on Configuration.  It's a year or so old and so does not cover all the feature, but it does cover most of them.  The initial installation will give you the default settings which should be acceptable for a quick start.

There are some excellent videos on YouTube.  Just search for Pilot2ATC.  Some of them are focussed on setup and many on using the program in flight.

On the volume issue, it sounds like your main volume setting for P2A in Windows is low.  With the program running, right click on the Speaker in the icon tray and select Open Volume Mixer.  Find the P2A icon and adjust the volume higher.

Yes you should turn off P3D ATC...and yes, P2A is aware of the AI Traffic.  P3D or your Traffic engine still controls AI Traffic, but P2A tries to keep you from crashing with them.

Radio Chatter is set up on the Sounds tab of Config.  There are many ways to set it up.  Getting the X-ATC Chatter package is the easiest and most immersive option, but you can also download your own files and set them up.

Yes, ATC will try to keep you from hitting the terrain in terms of clearances given.

CereProc and IVONA are the most commonly used voices...and yes, the CereProc voices should work.  If they don't you may need to get an update from CereProc.

Hope you enjoy the trial.

Hi Dave,

I've been going through the manual a bit as well...

Took me a while - but I think I figured out the volume thing - I didn't have an icon for P2A in my sound mixer - until - I started running P2A with "admin" privilege... It was late - but after that the volume seemed better in my brief test flight... It was weird - one transmission would be loud and the next I couldn't here - couldn't identify any rhyme or reason for it - maybe toggling between P2A and P3D had something to do with it... Hopefully it's resolved now but I'm only home on the weekends so I won't be able to evaluate further until then...

I had briefly tried a second USB monitor - but it just wasn't working on my desk so I disconnected it - I think some of my pop-ups for P2A are still trying to go to it - as they are now MIA - is there a master reset for P2A window positions somewhere ?

Looks like the Ivona voices moved to an Amazon cloud based service - so I don't think they are available for download and installation anymore...

Will the "X-ATC Chatter" package work in P3Dv4.5 ? It doesn't appear so...

How are approaches handled at "uncontrolled" fields ? Can you pick the approach ? Do you have options for vectors and flying the full plate ? Can you go missed ?

Found a good vid that went through just about everything:

For the window positions, you can delete the AppConfig.xml file and that will reset all the settings, including these window positions, to default.  It is located at c:\users\<UserName>\AppData\Roaming\P2A_200\Settings\AppConfig.xml where <UserName> is your PC User Name.

You can also follow the procedure for finding lost windows as follows:

1)    After starting Pilot2ATC and opening the desired window, Hover over the icon of the window on the Taskbar
2)    A larger thumbnail of the window should show
3)    Right-click that larger thumbnail
4)    Select Move
5)    Hold down the Right Arrow key on the keyboard until the program comes into view and move the mouse
6)    If that doesn’t work, hold down the left arrow
7)    Once the window is in view, use the mouse to move it to the desired location.
😎  Shut down Pilot2ATC so the location will be remembered.

I believe you can still purchase IVONA voices at NextUp.com.  Here's a link to a thread in this forum on voices:

X-ATC Chatter works in Pilot2ATC, not in the SIM so it will work with any SIM.  You don't run their standalone player, just install their .wav files.  Check out the P2A User's Guide for details.

When shooting approaches at uncontrolled airports, Approach Ctl will get you to a point where you're cleared for the approach and then let you switch to CTAF to call your intentions to other pilots at that airport.  There are ways to set up the Config so you can ensure you get the approach you put in your flight plan.  Do this by Unchecking the ATC Assigns STAR and ATC Assigns Approach options, and check the Force Pilot Runway Selection.

ATC decides if you will get vectors or be cleared for the published approach/transition.  You can always verbally request vectors for the ILS to Runway xxx, if you want to get vectors.  And yes, you may even be directed to go missed approach if there is traffic on the runway as you get close to touchdown.

Dave

Hi Dave,

LOL - thanks - you seem to be deliberately and systematically dismantling any argument I could make to stay loyal to my beloved RC4...

😁

I'm getting a new build up to speed and thought it might be a good time to evaluate other ATC programs...

I'm looking forward to delving deeper...

Hi Scott

I'm an ex RC4 user.

If you are looking for an alternative to RC4 could I also suggest you have a trial with PFE from On Course Software

I used this yesterday with our beloved LJ35 and the experience was 'pretty' close to perfect - frankly several magnitudes better than my experiences with RC4.  I normally fly on Pilotedge so know what should be happening.

PFE includes taxi instructions (in and out) and covers VFR.

I found a lengthy new tutorial video which lays it all out very well. here.

Kind regards.

Hi Dean,

Sounds interesting as well - I’ll take a gander at the tutorial you linked - thanks for taking the time... I think the holy grail which we’ve all been wanting is ATC that literally controls air traffic - but that’s probably a limitation of the SDK...

Yeah - it’s something how far our little Lear has come - the plane is just a hoot to fly...

Have a good night !

Scott
