Beta not an indicator of performance.

Featured Replies

Hi All,There's something I need to get off my chest.People keep complaining about the frame rates they're getting in the Beta and Demo, and are trying to find out what others are getting.?None of you can be serious. Stop complaining about a product that hasn't been finished yet. It's been mentioned over and over again that the performance of the finished product should be better than the Demo and Beta, so any whinging in regards to FPS is pointless.I'll reserve judgement about performance when the finished product is installed in my PC, and as usual will try to ignore all of the "OMG FSX runs like a slideshow! It's the new FS2000 OMG LOLZ" types of threads that seem to be emerging from clear idiots./rantJames

To be fair, framerate is not going to be radically better in the release version. It will be improved in some situations. Stutters especially have been improved a great deal, so you get a much smoother more consistent experience (and I'll post some notes after release on how to tweak this further). The blurries will also be hugely better.

What about autogen performance?

Ive been doing some testing with the FP Beta release and I have to say that I'm pretty happy with the performance so far. I'm particulary doing testing around the UK. Manchester, East Mids and Doncaster. Frame rates are at least as good as 2004. If anyone wants to know details on setting them let me know.

Hi,My main test mission includes a long section of low-level flying over the jungle. It's consistently running at the FPS limit I've set, and when I say jungle I mean *jungle* - and that's at medium autogen settings.Specifically, it's limited to 20fps; machine specs are dual 3GHz 64-bit Xeon, 2Gb memory, 7800 card with 512Mb memory. However, it's still smooth if I fly the entire low-level section at 4x acceleration pretending my ol' DC3 is a Tornado :)Granted, I've got a powerful machine, but the performance is still impressive. Can't comment on cities much though, I don't like cities...Jim

"threads that seem to be emerging from clear idiots"....in stark contrast to this gem, of course. The world may just have been saved by a few short paragraphs.

Beta tester for SIMStarter

Why would anyone think that the performance would be any better than the beta as far as fps is concerned?? This program is very graphically complex and i knew from the minute that i played the beta that what i saw was what i would get more or less in the final version. Overall it runs pretty darn good considering i have everything set to 3/4 as high as it goes running at 3840x1024 in matrox triplehead mode. There are stutters here and there and random bugs etc but overall i am impressed GREATLY by what i see. Its head and shoulders better than fs04.My question to aces:Is this game cpu or gpu bound? If i upgrade my 3.6 ghz p4 to an overclocked e6700 conroe processor using the same 7900gt card i use now will i see any difference in frame rate? Either way im building a conroe box but i will wait until dx10 hardware is out to do it if the game is gpu bound. Thanks and kudos on a great game.

Jimbofly is right.RhettAMD 3700+, eVGA 7800GT 256, ASUS A8N-E, PC Power 510 SLI, 2 GB Corsair XMS 3-3-3-8, etc. etc.

Well it looks like ACES doesn't totally agree with Jimbofly.I read from Brians message that there might be a slight increase in FPS but the important thing is that the overall smoothnes is improved, there will be less stutters and less burries. (result als alway dependend on used hardware). So many people seem to believe that there is a magical last minute large increase in FPS. I'm glad that Brian provides some background and basicly tells us what we can expect. I've had so many promisses about last minute programming miracles in the past that in the end where just lies. It refereshing to hear a true engineers standpoint.Believing in a large last minute significant FPS increase will probably set you up for a large dissapointment.I'm very glad that Brian posted this message. It increased my respect for the ACES team. They sound very serious and honest in their communication with us. I'm still on the fence wheter to buy early (it wil never be a to buy or not to buy) or wait until the add-ons and hardware catch up a little.

As far as framerate goes, FSX is mostly CPU bound. A high end graphics card has more effect on how good things look than on how fast it runs. This is subject to change when the DX10 update comes, though.

Hi NotASenator,Making any progres with your my AI/ATC program yet? There appear to be some people that complain about lower then expected FPS in the Demo and/or Beta3. Some other people claimed that the problem isn't there or that the latest ACES fixes would magicly cure this FPS problem. Both camps have their proponents. These guys just can't keep themself posting to each other every time just stating the same argument over and over.Very boring for bystanders. So tell you what, I will not answer your posts anymore. It keeps the treads from growing to large. If you have any questions just PM me. I wil answer you directly.Fair enough?

Here's my deal-AMD 2800xp (2.1 cpu)1 Gig DDR 2700Nvidia 6600 GT 128 MB VideoWindows Home SP2FS9- All sliders to the right except water detail-I never fly over water anyhow and also clouds (3D) are kept around 75%. I get very good performance and only notice bad frames when in the PMDG 737NG in big cities and also the Aeroworx B200 in hard weather and any cities. Very nice FS sessions with this rig for FS9.FS10- Most sliders half-way to 75% region with auto-gen 50% and Airport AI/Watercraft AI set pretty low (and again water detail low-no Bloom or Lens Flare)I am AMAZED at how well FS10 runs on my lowly system. AMAZED! I have the FPS locked at 20 and the only time the sim has yet (file planet Beta) dropped to 6-8 FPS is when I run the 737NG and also when I use the Garmin 1000 on an aircraft in big cities. Also, I have bumped up auto gen to get nice trees. I LOVE the trees. Finally, you can land at an airport, down below trees and have trees fully border your aircraft all around. Most of them time though, Im right at 14-19 FPS and I adore the new textures for Florida, Georgia, and North Carolina where i have done the most flying. I have to believe that those who get slide shows on their systems with twice the horsepower as mine (aka, dual-core cpu's and the PCIE video cards) must have the sliders ALL the way maxed on everything and expect it to run fabulously. I get really decent performance on my old system, and cant wait to upgrade to a new dual core machine with Direct X 10 PCI-E cards and 2+ gigs of RAM. I have to give mucho thanks to the ACES team too for all their cooperation and really people, the default aircraft are LEAPS and Heaps and Bounds beyond any default aircraft of the past. I actually enjoy them! I look forward to new hardware, and I have nothing but good to say about the new sim. BTW, I agree 100% with Jeff A- I love the Eye Candy. That's one of the things that attracts real-world pilots to the skies- the fact that you get a different perspective on the world. I guarantee you that a pile of pilots never learned to fly to satisfy their hankering to use a FMS or speak to ATC. I happen to love all those things, and that kind of technical flight better than low and slow VFR, but low and slow VFR is much more available now with FSX.Thanks ACES!
