Dynamic lighting performance hit with PMDG NGXu

Featured Replies

I bought a 1080ti last year and it dealt with the dynamic lighting performance issue for airports and aircraft. Well it's back again with the exact same scenario with dynamic lighting on.  Anyone else experience this?

Tony Fontaine

I’m seeing this also along with a few other. The new NGXu uses DL for the VC floods where as the 747-8 and all other PMDG aircraft use texture based for VC flood lights.

Here is a test you can try and I would be interested in hearing from a 2080ti user because everyone I have talked to are using a 1080ti.

Load up in the 737 NGXu at KMSP at night on runway 30L. First turn on your panel backlights and notice your GPU usage. Than turn on your exterior taxi, runway turnoff and landing lights and notice your usage. Then turn on the VC floods slightly for pilots and AP panel. You will notice your GPU usage just hit 99%.

My post from PMDG forums.

- No VC Flood, No Taxi or Landing Lights = 60% GPU Usage
- VC Floods, No Taxi or Landing = 75% GPU Usage
- VC Floods, Taxi and Landing = 99% GPU Usage

Original NGX with all lights on, same locations = 60% GPU Usage Even the 747-8 doesn't cause this big of a hit in GPU usage.

Just to repeat my original request, if a 2080ti users could report there findings I would really appreciate it. I know DL can be a performance hitter but when VC lighting can effect your performance that’s just crazy. For now I have to turn off VC floods during taxi, takeoff and landings to maintain low GPU usage in order to have smooth performance. The old NGX with all its lights on doesn’t even doesn’t even cause my 1080ti to break a sweat. Even the FSLabs with all its lights doesn’t hit my system as hard as the NGXu VC lights do.

Any 2080ti takers? I'm really interested in your findings.

I have to confirm that i also have no issues with performance on 1080ti

Ok, than if you don't mind, using the above scenario or any other airport at night, what was your GPU usage with all lights on? I'm looking for % as you turn on each options as I listed above. There are more reports of others seeing the same thing about performance and I'm trying to figure out what may be causing it or if it's just the new DL with the plane.

Are you running SSAA under 4K by any chance?

I don't use any AA settings. I run a 4K display. On discord now with fellow VA members and 90% of them are seeing night time GPU usage hits. Were looking at 7 different computer configs and software installs.

Ok odd. because some people on 1080Tis are ok.. maybe Nvidia drivers are a factor.. or simulator resolution. @Johnny19 what resolution do you run the simulator at?

Thanks. I'm flying it right now and performance is great along with CPU usage. It's does DL lights they added to the VC floods that is putting a hurt on the GPU at night. Until now, all PMDG VC was texture based lightning. I am really interested in a 2080ti user feedback to see if that card brings down the GPU usage.

I did try turning lights in VC in daylight and no hit. I'm flying real zulu time so it's daylight in illinois

Standard 4K res locked at 30hz. I'm not having FPS issues, at least not until the GPU pegs at 99%.

Ok the reports are at night with taxi lights enabled and landing lights enabled.. when you can check if you can replicate.
