December 30, 20196 yr Hi all, in the real world, is there general rule of thumb as to when one gets landing RW information as you make your way towards the destination? For instance, does a controller clear you to a designated RW 30nm, 40nm etc? Just wondering how does one prepare the FMC for landing information as you near the approach? I guess I'm a bit confused about how this is handled (I'd like to prepare for Vatsim sometime soon but would like to get an idea of how this all works beforehand). Mario Di Lauro
December 30, 20196 yr You can usually receive the ATIS 80-100nm out which will give general information on runways in use. With an ACARS-equipped acft, you can get the D-ATIS downlinked anytime at your leisure. Generally, you'll be notified what runway to expect when you first contact approach control...if there's any doubt, query the controller. The controller should identify the specific runway when approach vectors begin, or when cleared to an IAF for a full procedure. December 30, 20196 yr In addition to Bob’s comments, if you’re having trouble obtaining the ATIS or expect the possibility of a runway change, the wind is forecast to swing round for example , you can set up the alternative approach in route 2 in the FMC. That way you can set up and brief 2 arrivals and you’re covered, if you get a last minute runway change it’s quick and easy to activate and execute route 2. 787 captain. December 30, 20196 yr It's always funny when some pilots do endless briefings for the expected runway with lots of useless details and when you suddenly get a different runway, the re-briefing takes only a few seconds 😉
