No Nav/GPS Switch

Featured Replies

Hi all :)  I'm trying to get the 750 to work in my new iFly 747 and so far am having no luck.  There is no nav/gps switch and I can't get the unit to control the plane.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

For starters, a GTN750 in a 747 is a pretty strange avionics choice...

However, the GTN has a CDI key at the bottom of the Map page which switches the unit between VLOC and GPS modes..

Wow, I ask for help and get criticized for my "strange" choice of wanting to use my rxp 750 in my nicest plane.  That's awesome and really helpful.  Thanks!

And I provided the answer..

This is the official support channel for Reality XP products, right?

I believe I stated my question well, to paraphrase, 'How do it make it work with this plane?'  It seems a straight forward question.  But, as a first order of business, Bert ridicules the even thought of using your unit in that plane and then offers an obvious suggestion.  I didn't ask for his or anyone else's opinion of what I was trying to do. Only for help doing it or understanding why it won't work.  And so you're thumb's up opinion over actual support and ridiculous suggestions from whoever happens to be around?  As Official support?

@Joe_Candy Hi, yes this is the official support forum.

Adding any GPS in an aircraft already having a GPS system (in this case a FMS most likely) is prone to fail for the simple reason the aircraft already has a GPS system which is inherently embedded in the entire aircraft system and can't be 'deactivated' (at least in most such aircraft). Therefore, the FMS will internally fight for the CDI mode and a good indication it is not meant to be replaced is the lack of NAV/GPS switch on the panel.

Please agree cultural and language barriers inherently makes people misinterpret each other more often than not when speaking to each other, let alone when writing to each other. If you're not accustomed to French culture for example I'm pretty certain you'd be astonished how different this could be (why making movies R rated for a quarter of second appearance of a nipple, while being PG13 when 2 dozens or more cadavers splash the screen with blood is a good example of this kind of cultural difference: ratings would most likely be reversed in France and many other countries around the world). And you won't even imagine the differences between Quebec (in Canada) and the other Canadian provinces...

I appreciate your reply, Jean-Luc.  I do think the first response on an official channel should be positive and welcoming.  And I think respondents should be limited to those who can accurately address the issue.  On a new issue, , Could you make a switch that would override the onboard of the fancier planes?

I'm not sure to understand what do you mean. Are you referring to a hardware switch type, which would control the NAV/GPS switch source? In this case, the GTN VLOC virtual key on the MAP screen view IS what you are looking for.

I just "happened to be around"... so let me add my thoughts..

Addon airplanes often have custom avionics implementations, attempting to simulate the actual aircraft as accurately as possible.  An airliner typically uses an FMC as the commanding unit to steer the autopilot in "GPS" mode.

Hence the difficulty in dropping in a GTN750 into an airliner and expecting it to take over control.   You would likely have to reprogram the autopilot to accept input from the GTN instead of the FMC.. something that users have successfully done for various regional airliners and shared on these forums..
