CAST & RECEIVE SHADOWS

Featured Replies

Just wanted to know if the receive simobjects

shadows is still causing a drop in FPS and stutters at certain airports in v4.5 hf2

as mentioned in Rob Ainscough video is to uncheck it.

but that was back in v3.

Or has it been addressed?

cheers

one thing I can recommend for sure is to have a separate night profile where you turn off cloud shadows.  Obviously no need burning computer resources on that when it's dark.  These days I have a day profile and a night profile.

Thanks for the reply, I typically fly long haul from day to night or vice versa.i keep my settings the same. Haven’t really had a fluctuation in performance.

but I then again I don’t have cast and receive

shadows terrain and Simobjects unchecked are the moment.

cheers

for me when I'm at the gate or during taxi ops I notice (at night) that having my cloud shadows off is a big help. I like dynamic lighting and reflections.  So I need the help where i can get it

What are you system specs?

In signature. But you should try if you haven’t. Most of the time I get easy locked 30 with no issues. Certain airports with heavy traffic and heavy weather can give me small hiccups to 25 or so. Like flytampa Boston with tons of ai or vatsim.

For the same reason I turn off dynamic lighting in the day.

You are right. I am at work at the moment.

cast : terrain / clouds

receive : buildings / simobjects

You will have shadows on the ground, on buildings and simobjects like airports

Vegetation not set received does not show much different from checked but helps performance ( top tip from Rob A )

It fully depends on where you put your focus on. For me, shadows are an extreme immersion factor, that is why I have most shadowing options turned on, same goes for reflections (which you anyway do not see that often when not flying around islands etc.). I rather turn down autogen building density one notch and autogen draw distance one notch for the sake of better shadowing options. Nothing kills immersion more than having AI planes and user plane on a tarmac but not casting shadows.

I disagree. I also have vegetation casting shadows disabled for the sake of some performance gains and better looks on photoground, but turning off the "receive" shadows for trees results in strangely "illuminated" trees when you have an overcast situation with cloud shadows enabled. Same for the buildings, they pop out due to being to bright when the "receive" option is turned off. There are many simmers having their sim set up like this and their videos really look strange due to this fact.

Yes I have noticed the same effect,
I notice that shadows for terrain and vegetation casting is horrible

and also casting AI aircraft shadows are horrible also.

what would you guys recommend for reflections?

thanks

mike
