October 29, 200619 yr >I bet>it would have been alot more productive and beneficial to the>community as a whole and we would have recieved it sooner. For some reason, I'm visualizing this so called "community", as a bunch of carp in a stirred frenzy awaiting someone to throw a few morsels of left over popcorn towards their bobbing heads & throbbing oversized lips. And all the while, hoping that the Microsoft fairy will turn them into Rainbow Trout.Ah.......it's just a picture in my mind, and may mean nothing.. :-hahL.Adamson
October 29, 200619 yr >Absolutely spot on agree with your post!>>I have it scaled way back but still get more enjoyment out of>it than FS9. I swear the feel of flight is better (using an>aircraft imported from FS9!).>>I know that hardware will catch up, despite what others are>saying, and I know that in about a year from now I'll be>running it with most of the sliders at least half way up,>including autogen.>>FSX here I come!>>James James, "In about a year from now is right." Sorry to jump on a wagon here. But I choose to not follow the flock till I actually see or have firm evidence that it has advanced in things other than pretty grass on the side of a hill. (Icing, Flight Characteristics and Thunderstorm effects). I don't know anyone in their right head that would fly a C-172 through a Level 5 or 6 storm... Unless there are some advancements in those directions. My FS9 with all of about $500.00 worth of add-on's will stay before I make a move period. Not to bash the product but I will touch the water before I just jump in. Happy Landings, Josh
October 29, 200619 yr I'm visualizing frenzied Carp swimming at 4 FPS not being able to swim fast enough to get any morsels of left over popcorn, because the autogen popcorn morsels brought their framerate down to 2 FPS, so the frenzied carp disabled the popcorn morsel sliders, so they DIE of starvation BEFORE the Microsoft fairy arrives with the promised 'Carp Patch' to turn them into DX10 Rainbow Trout! :-badteeth
October 29, 200619 yr Cars are a totally different. I am just saying that whether it is either from the MS Flight Sim Series, Falcon Series, Janes, Id Games, an EA Game, Sierra, whatever, some tweaking, modification or hardware change is needed in these games to make them run better or to our liking. It is has been that way with this hobby since the beginning. The only change I have seen where something runs vanilla out of the box is via a console, but with that said you won't get the depth of these games on a console. Not at this time anyway, maybe down the road. The main hangup is that there are so many hardware variations nowadays on these PC's & MS could have done a better job on the Hardware detection for scaling the vast majority of PC's without the User getting involved. I too don't have a great bit of time with 2 Kids (2yr old & 7yr old). I try to fit in this Hobby when time allows & I do feel your pain on the upgrades, but in the PC World this stuff Changes every 6 months & I couldn't tell you the amount of upgrades done on my box in the last year. You just have to plan upgrades accordly. I agree that the cycle should stop or slow down otherwise it just frustrates more people in the PC Game Platform market.SlackAdjusterGigabyte GA-965p-DS3Intel Allendale E6400 OC'd 3.48 GHZ 8X435FSB (for everyday use)Corsair XMS2 6400 2x 1GB 5 5 5 122x Hitachi 80gb Raid 0Sapphire X1900GTAudigy 2Leadtek WinTV 2000Windows XP Pro SP2

October 29, 200619 yr "All I gotta say is that if you want to continue to be a part of this hobby , please start saving money now. Taking out your second mortgage or start the re-fi on your house."That would apply more to real flying.... I can buy fsx, and new video card, and 2 more megs of memory (which I did for fsx) for what it costs to fly my Baron for 1.5 hours of instrument approaches at my local field. That real 1.5 hours will be over in 1.5 hours! Fsx will last the next 3 years and countless hours..and it is getting so real.....The fsx Baron is much closer to the real thing than ever-it sends shivers down my spine-and it even can have a simplified g1000 that would cost (if certified) about $40,000 to put in my plane-along with lots of other avionics I can only drool about (reality xp Seandel etc.). I can fly all over the world for many more virtual hours than I have done in my real life in the next 3 years-and see places in the world that I will never be able to fly my real bird. I can practice in real weather I would probably never go up in, and try aircraft I may never fly. Instead of spending huge amounts of $$ practicing procedures, familiarity, and technique at $200/hr. in the air-I can practice countless hours in fsx for the price of a single 1.5 hour real flight-even with upgrades.I can now even now give flying lessons to others-saving lots of real time and money on procedures and general coordination. Ka ching-Kaching-start adding it all up-fsx is a bargain..Talk about spending money for the future(and mortgaging the house)-I just put two new engines in my real Baron that will be good for hopefully the next 10 years...I'll fly for real probably 1/30 of what I will do with fsx-and believe me-upgrading your system would start to just pay for only new hose connections to the engines. For those that are pilots-fs gives a way to practice lots of things at a minor cost saving a major cost. For non pilots-to think you are getting such a taste of what we pay megabucks for for relative pennys-what a priviledge! The money spent for fs-a bargain. You can compare golfing and boating too if you want to also.As an interesting side note-while getting engines my plane was down for 2.5 months and I didn't fly during this period. I went up with a very tough cfi to check out when the new engines were installed -he said he would have had no idea that I hadn't flown for so long-he could detect no rustiness. Could it have been practice in the sim? Enquiring minds want to know :-)http://mywebpages.comcast.net/geofa/pages/rxp-pilot.jpg Geofa WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE-the best Flight Sim!
October 29, 200619 yr I'm visualizing carp that are all stuck in one side of the pond where the food is not-only because they don't realize that any autogen blurrs the high resolution textures which ultimately give a greater reality of flight. They are frenzied however-beyond doubt-and don't seem to be able to make it to the food....ever. A shame becuase they will all starve.http://mywebpages.comcast.net/geofa/pages/rxp-pilot.jpg Geofa WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE-the best Flight Sim!
October 29, 200619 yr Mike, That was the funniest thing I have read in over a year. You almost had me cleaning up my accident. lol Look the plain fact is that this is a cycle and it needs to stop. I would rather buy a FS a year then continue to be let down by my magic trout. This is simply in a very complicated way a financial act and the show is over. I want to hear some opinions about the FSX commercial. I first had my doubts when I saw the beechcraft going up and down like a teeter-totter.
October 29, 200619 yr Well, on the one hand I am very happy that Microsoft has given such press to the Flight Simulator series. For them to bother to even pay for a commercial (albeit on the National Geographic Channel...what are they tryin go say?). Still, to me that means that Microsoft has taken notice of this community and it is a great plus for all of us. I could not be more happy with the fact that we EVEN have a commercial and the powers that be from MS are here interacting with us on the forums. On the other hand, the commercial, to me, was like trying to explain Einstein's Theory of Special Relativity with sock puppets. It was dumbed down to the point of embarassment. When the capabilities of the simulation allow us to exact a real-world flight, anywhere on this planet, in every aspect from take-off to touch-down within minutes of its realworld counterpart and replicate every iota of aircraft from a glider to Concorde...every switch, every gauge, every nuance...THAT commercial is what we got?The fact is that MSFS exists in a 'netherworld'. Hardcore XBOX, PC FPS, Playstation2 gamers wouldn't give MSFS a second thought. While, the curious at the local software shop might pick it up because it is a bit of a 'cool thing' to do. And then here WE are the hardcore set. 99.9% of the population doesn't see the attraction to MSFS and 100% of wives don't either! :-badteethAt the end of the day, the commerical is sophomoric and embarassing with the stuttering graphics and dumbed down scenerio. If one begs to differ, then I invite you to post a topic on this forum entitled "FS is just a game"! Unfortunately, that's the way it is portrayed in the commerical. OOOOOH you can do loops in an air race! Oh my!
October 29, 200619 yr The few times the frenzied carp stuck their heads out of the water they saw trees, houses, cars and aircraft and they were convinced THAT was the real world.THEN some new berzerk carp suddenly appeared trying to convince the frenzied carp that the world doesn't have these things...instead the world is flat and looks like a desert, and if the frenzied carp joined the FLAT world of the berzerk carp they would be much happier. So the frienzied carp though it over: On our side of the pond, we've got trees, houses, cars, aircraft and stuff. On their side of the world, it is devoid of vegetation, houses and looks like a big fat desert. The frenzied carp voted and decided to stay on their side of their pond. They realized that while their side of the pond is old and your side of the pond is new, they could continue to swim with all their food sliders on HIGH, while the berzerk carp had to turn all their food sliders OFF. In the end, the frenzied carp watched with curiosity as the berzerk carp spent all their time tweaking their side of the pond so they could get enough FPS to turn their food sliders ON again, but the Microsoft Fairy appeared and told them that they would have to wait for the FUTURE of ponds before they could turn their food sliders ON again and would have to keep their food sliders OFF. They tweaked and tweaked and tweaked and tweaked and soon the Microsoft Fairy appeard again and deactivated their side of the pond! In the end, dazed and confused from the non-stop pond tweaking their side of the pond imploded into a burry, stuttering mess and the berzerk carp dropped dead from starvation and exaustion. Meanwhile, the happy frenzied carp laughed their hind fins off and swam merrily at 50 FPS. The moral of the story? A frienzied carp in hand is worth 2 berzerk carps in the bush.
October 29, 200619 yr Geofa:Look. I'm more than happy to debate with you the merits, or lack there of, of FSX all day long. My comments are fair and balanced JUST like my Reviews. I never insult (I belive that intellect is a better weapon) but WILL argue my point and challenge you to step up to the plate if you wish to rebut. I am not the 'guy above' Furthermore, the 'guy above' is not my concern. If you wish to point out 'a prior thread' that offends you feel free to do so. But I don't agree with you in ANY regard to FSX. That is my perogative. What I'd like you to do is either tell me what 'politics' I'm involved in (I am a Republican) or refrain from JUDGING what I do or don't get involived in.Let's not make this personal. At the end of the day, as I said in a prior thread to YOU. YOU are entitled to your own opinion but you are NOT entitled to your own facts.Look around you. For the FIRST time, Avsim has split the MSFS Forum in two FSX and FS9. This is unprecedented, ergo, it has never happened before. Why do you think that is??? (Not a rhetorical question)(Edited: Because I am drinking heavily)
October 29, 200619 yr How come a differing carp is "berzerk" or "a really excited user" from other?I've posted real shots comparing-I rest my case.If you like sim city lego autogen-that is fine.I like reality-quite a few others have confirmed. How about changing "berzerk" to "different opinion"-much more acceptable-since I assume neither you or I are "bezerk".I'd expect more from a avsim reviewer-as I was one once too.I see the editing-but still...http://mywebpages.comcast.net/geofa/pages/rxp-pilot.jpg Geofa WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE-the best Flight Sim!
October 29, 200619 yr Berzerk Carp. Dude, this is all in fun, who are you trying to convince that FSX is great? Me or yourself?'L' (who I've got GREAT RESPECT FOR BTW), did the frenzied carp and I thought it was hilarious. So, this frenzied carp stands by his Berzerk Carp statement. If you are a carp and not berzerk, then I stand corrected. I am, of course, not above reproach and hereby apologize to ALL carps, everywhere!
October 29, 200619 yr I guess I am after the truth-not interested in you or myself.Like the guy above who mentioned a wrong Baron flight parmameter above-then managed to hurl insults-I'm getting real tired of it-and it seems that someone that represents avsim would not get into politics (a prior thread) and be above such drivel...It should be fun here-sure isn't a lot of the time.http://mywebpages.comcast.net/geofa/pages/rxp-pilot.jpg Geofa WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE-the best Flight Sim!
October 29, 200619 yr Carp...LOL...Had to go tell my goldfish in the pond outback that one....Read the whole thread and I laughed the hardest at that :) Now for an opinion from a newbie :)I too bought FSX and I too was extremely disappointed at the performance...so, my card being a bit old , 6800 Ultra, I upped it to a 7950GT...stuck in an X2 4600 as well...frames are better but not what I would expect from a new game. HL2 and Fear run better than this and look better. Same with BF2 and Lock on. Apples and Oranges maybe...but they all are at the top of the heap for design, gameplay and graphics in their own ways. Yes we can turn everything down in FSX but now it looks worse than FS9... :(...whats the point? Yes, I applied "all" the tweaks and it got a bit better, but still FS9 looked better, flew better (as in better frames, smoother flight) and even sounded better (new sound card too :) )...using high end add ons.. Personally, I think making a game to run 3 years from now, when a new version will probably be coming out in 3 years borders on insanity.. :) I don't want to go out and spend $4000 dollars on a machine that will show FSX in all it's glory, since it probably still won't run it...Also, being an amatuer builder I would definitely not take seriously the idea that a $1200 system, with Vista and a midrange DX10 card would ever make this game run any faster...FSX missed the boat with dual core,64 bit and SLI plain and simple. Lets face it, I doubt will ever see 4 or 5 ghz processors...we've already hit the dreaded heat wall. Why quad core? Because dual core will hit the same wall as single core did. Heat. SLI, it's already been proven in lots of benchmarks that the CPU has limited what SLI can do, just as it can limit what a high end single vid card can do...Maybe it will help at 3500 X whatever...but lets face it, how many of us run resolutions that high? And why SLI? Are we getting close to a wall there as well? What is SLI but another type of dual core...I saw ATI's new card with the GDDR 4 on board...Dual slot design...why? Heat... 64 bit ? Only know from what I read, and what I read is fast and has loads of addressable ram...and not for FSX...enough said.. Everyone says wait for DX10, Vista and QuadCore...OK, I need to spend another $ 650+ for a topend DX10 card, which it's obvious that FSX needs. But will it make a difference? Hmmm...we're already on pixil shader 3.0 in just about every new card out there...but FSX only uses PS 2.0...so in a DX10 card we're going to make that magic jump to PS 4.0 which is what the new DX10 cards are all about? Somehow I don't see them rewriting the entire graphics engine to take advantage of what PS 4.0 and it's unified pipelines can do... How much will Quad Core cost? No idea but it's not much use since FSX makes very little use of dual core. So I'll spend all kinds of cash on a CPU that will have 1 core running flat out at 100%, another at maybe 12%, and the other 2 just sitting there like lumps on a log...waste of cash for FSX ? And the $1200 dollar midrange PC ? It won't have a power supply capable of supporting the vid card, much less the CPU, loads of ram, Raid drives and whatever else we will all need to get this thing to look decent and run LOL..The case will be undercooled because of the heat from the Quad CPU sitting inside it. Better off building from scratch..I do agree with the earlier post...For bush flying is all this FSX is good for right now in this "amateurs" eyes..For the heavy work, it's back to FS9...I have no want nor desire to fly into Seattle in my Level D or PMDG. and have it look like a scene out of the Twilight Zone...you know, the episode where Burgess Mereidith who loves to read is that poor last guy on earth and he broke his glasses ??? Or maybe a berzerker carp will jump out of a building and eat up me and my plane like in that Stephen King movie LOL....Or have it running with some sceneryand traffic but at 6 frames a second...which I think in anyones mind is unflyable. My opinions are my own and not meant to be taken lightly...or seriously... :) And no offense is intended to anyone, for or against this argument..LarryA64 4600 X22 GB Samsung PC3200EVGA 7950 GT KO w512 MB onboardDFI SLI - D Ultra Lan Party1x Western Digital 36 GB SATA 10,000 RPM Raptor2x Seagate 80 GB SATA 7200 RPM Barracudas in Raid 01x Seagate 200 GB IDE 7200 RPM BarracudaCreative X-FI GamerAntec Neo 550 watt PSAntec Super Lanboy towerTrack IR 4CH Products Yoke, Throttle Quadrant, Rudder PedalsSaitek X-52Windows XP
