Nav data subscriptions

Recommended Posts

After some issues, both with FSLabs and Aerosoft airbusses, i am wondering what is the best solution for FMS data ?

I took FS aerodata subscription, then i took also Navigraph and sometimes the Aerosors files. Maybe better not to mix and certainly not necessary to deal with all of them together...

I can read postings about issues with ATC-comm frequencies being not 100% correct but i must agree this is without importance  for us as we are not communicating irl, so comm frequencies are less important, but i am having difficulties with incorrect ILS frequencies, at different international big airports, so how to deal with this ?

I think you might be confusing the difference between the products. ILS frequencies at airports are set in the scenery files.

Navigraph and Aerosoft FMS data simply updates the FMS data of a specific aircraft, it doesn't touch the simulator's scenery files.  This means that your aircraft could be set to a different ILS frequency because the frequency in the scenery file isn't the same.

FSAerodata updates the default scenery files to show the correct navaid frequencies and updates the simulator's default navigation (GPS) with missing approaches, SIDs, and STARs.

The two types of products are very different from eachother but together give you the most up-to-date setup.  Since you need a Navigraph subscription to use FSAerodata, it only makes sense to use Navigraph for your aircraft's FMS database and FSAerodata for your scenery updates. Keep in mind that FSAerodata won't touch addon scenery airports, those have to be updated by the developer of the specific airport.

Hope this helps.

OK, thx, and wich service can be swapped with AeroSors, because this is a free service. Can i change one of these 2 services with AeroSors updates or is this yet another 3 th different service ?

Subscription is a dirty word since MSFS was announced 😀.

And now freebies is the expected as a result. Sod developers spending a lot of money and resources on payware add-ons, 'we-want-MSFS-to-give-us-freebies'🤣

Or, oo'er have I gauged it wrong? Time will tell.

In my opinion you won't need any subscription at all... just get it one time and put it all together for a consistent navdata-set.

The most reasonable approach is to have one set of FMS-Data and an updated scenery which fits together as good as possible (e.g. both on one AIRAC-cycle).

There will always be some discrepancies like changed IATA-codes etc., but it will work for the most places 😉

1) FMS-Data
They are only related to the plane or map-tool you are using, so this has nothing to do with the actual scenery in the sim.
If one only updates this, you will have a lot of problems, because P3D-data is now "very" old and this is definitely not the way to go

So, also point 2) is important...

2) Scenery-Update
At the moment there are two possibilities to update your scenery navdata - those can be combined too.
a) FSAerodata:
This update will put the new navdata on top of the scenery library. The good thing is, it will override any of the wrong ILS-frequencies of default and also addon-airports. The underlying incorrect navdata will be removed for default- but not addon-airports (which leads to multiple ILS-navaids in some cases).
Note: This navdata-update is not compatible with the addon Aivlasoft EFB2, so a lot of updated ILS-approaches will not be available there (just for information).
b) Herve Sors:
Herve's update will modify all the default airports and other navaids. So this is a great update and even free. The problem is, it will NOT update any of the addon-airports around, and also ORBX Vector or LC will introduce new airport BGLs (again with outdated navdata). These will not be updated with Herve's update.

It does not harm to update the default airports using Herve Sors files, but if you're using a lot of addon-airports (like mentioned also ORBX Vector adds a lot of airports!) you should use FSAerodata...unfortunately the tool EFB2 will not be compatible then.
Of course the same AIRAC-cycle for the FMS-data has to be in place too, to make things fit together.

Hope that helps 🙂

Now available for Prepar3dv5!

Unfortunately, at the moment ILS/Rwy regional updates package unavailable...

I deal with this in the following way:

I check the frequencies of the arrival airport to see whether it matches the FMCs or GTN 750s database. If not, I change it manually. Done and done. No need to fuzz around with 3 diff other programs.

To be honest, unless you you're flying online, I don't see the need for a navdata subscriptions. The charts are nice to have, though.

FSAeroData will change the ILS frequencies for add-on airports as long as the FSAD entries are at the very top of the scenery library, above all other installed scenery. Of course, at the moment FSAD is not available for P3DV5, I don’t know if that will change in the future or not.

I hope that MSFS will use a system like X-Plane currently does, where the data for all nav aids in the scenery are stored in regular text files that can be easily edited, rather than having the data “baked in” to scenery .bgl files like FSX and P3D.
