Going from 16 to 32Gb RAM

Recommended Posts

Has anyone any experience of upgrading from 16 to 32Gb of RAM and whether the cost of extra RAM is justified? I understand that in P3d the difference in the extra memory would hardly be of any concern, but now I fly a lot in DCS I'm wondering if the extra memory could be helpful.  Cheers fellas.

You'll probably see a general increase in responsiveness from your system and it will appear to run smoother, if that's any sort of description. I've heard people swear by the increase in RAM and others who snort.

Never a bad thing though, is? An increase in RAM?

Do you run application that use up all of your 16gb? Look at Task manager to see how much system memory you are using.

If you have 16gb and Prepar3D along with every thing else is using 9Gb out of the 16GB then when you install 32gb, under the same condition

you'll be using 9gb out of 32gb. If you are told by Asobo that Microsoft flight simulator typically uses 24gb of system memory then if you want to run

that app you should go to 32GB. If 16gb is not giving you enough overhead to the apps you run then get 32gb. Is 16gb is enough to meet your current requirement

then leave it alone. When it no nolonger meets your requirement get 32gb. Simple!

It's justified if you actually need it.  Yes, DCS World can exceed 16GB in certain demanding scenarios...if you're pushing it to the point where you're in that group (or realistically anticipate reaching that point), then it's probably worth having.  In most real-time programs (e.g. games and simulations) you'll clearly see the performance hit that occurs when you run out of physical RAM and paging to bulk storage begins.

If, however, your use doesn't drive memory usage that high, it's just pointless and expensive window-dressing, much the same as having 1.2TB of data sitting on 4TB SSD rather than using a much less expensive 2TB drive.

A new version of DCS World is due out any day now,It could contain many improvements and some optimization,You might want to wait to see how it benefits  your current system.

One benefit from 32gb ram is the ability to max out the preload radius. Since I got 32GB and set this to max I often see over 16GB use when in missions etc.
