Tempted with the PMDG 777. Should I get it?

Featured Replies

Well, the title summarizes my dilemma. I mean, hell has frozen over (sort of), and PMDG has offered a bargain. I'm getting the itch to buy tthe 777, but then I remember it's VC only. I'm a declared 2D-saur but, if the performance is right, I can let this fact pass. I'll just mess with the camera settings and it's all done. My only experience with VC-only airliners is the Aerosoft Airbus and the QW 787:
- Aerosoft Airbus: since Aerosoft recommends using unlimited FPS, I need to change this everytime I fly this plane. Otherwise, it can't keep the 30 FPS lock I usually have, and that all my other aircraft (even iFly) can keep. Furthermore, I have to leave the mouse cursor over a 2D window (such as the view bar) whenever I'm not using it. The cursor curse affects these birds heavily.
- QW 787: I barely flew 2 patterns with it. While the FBW was great, FPS were not, and thus I returned it.

I've seen lots of good comments about the 777 (including the auto-cruise mode), but I fear my rig won't be up to the task. And if we take into account that the 77L+77W would end up costing $90 (with the promo), and that PMDG does not do refunds, I'm not sure if I would be wasting my money (specially when it's a significant part of my income) or not. What have your experiences with the PMDG 777 been?

Main rig: self built, AMD Ryzen 7 5700X3D (with SMT off and CO -50 mV), 2x16 GB DDR4-3200 RAM, Nvidia RTX 5060Ti 16GB, 256 GB M.2 SSD (OS+apps) + 2x1 TB SATA III SSD (sims) + 1 TB 7200 rpm HDD (storage), ID-Cooling SE-224-XTS air cooler, Viewsonic VX2458-MHD 1920x1080@120-144 Hz (G-sync compatible), Windows 11. Running P3D v5.4 (with v4.5 scenery objects as an additional library, just in case), FSX-SE, MSFS2020, MSFS2024 and even FS9! Lossless Scaling for all my sims. What a godsend...

Mobile rig: ASUS Zenbook UM425QA (AMD Ryzen 7 5800H APU @3.2 GHz and boost disabled, 1 TB M.2 SSD, 16 GB RAM, Windows 11 Pro). Running FS9 there .

I’ve had the 777 for a long time and my rig is not very current, i2700k 3.85ghz, GTS670 4mb, Win7 64 bit, but I get really good performance with it. Going into big hubs like FSDT JFK with 70% traffic yields usually around 25-30 and I run it with unlimited FPS and is smooth.

That being said, with MSFS right around the corner I’m not buying any more addons at all for FSX and I’ve never bought one version of P3D, so I’m going to wait. However, if you think you might skip MSFS and stick to FSX I’d get it. Great plane, no issues and fun to fly. Love the auto cruise for long hauls over the ocean as well.

Not sure what you’re specs are for your computer but if it’s at least as good as mine you shouldn’t have any performance issues.

I just read the whole post again and don’t see any specs. If you're talking about in his signature, we can’t see signature boxes on mobile devices, at least not on iPhones which is what I’m reading the forum on.

Thanks, Peter and Campbell. While you couldn't read my specs, the ones you gave me give me some hope.

Well, I got it: I purchased the 777-200LR only. Right now, I think I'll let the 777-300ER pass, specially when I found a 772 livery I thought it was 773-only. Having previous experience with the PSS 777 in FS9, these were the only surprises I got:
- Hand-flying was very beautiful.
- FPS during approach were good... as long as I left my mouse alone.
- Autocruise: I've never seen a plane performing so stable with 8x or even 16x. Looks like I got my new long-haul champion.

I'll need to tweak the camera settings to my liking (no head moving, and being able to see both the runway and the upper EICAS). So, thanks for your opinions. Maybe after these camera tweaks, I'll be fully satisfied with this plane.
