FSX 48 Hours .... Agony to Ecstasy ... True FS9 Perform...

Featured Replies

Good day to all,After working the last two days to improve my FSX performance on my mid-level computer I feel that I am now truly at FS9 FPS and quality. None of the tweaks or suggestions are mine and I will glady credit those who got me to this point. Like many I was ready to park FSX on my shelf until a better computer could be built, this is no longer neccessary. I assure anyone who feels that these numbers are made up that this is actually the performance and quality that I am now getting. Autogen appears to be very dense both trees and buildings and the simulations is smooth. Prior to these changes FSX was almost unflyable for me with FPS in the 6-11 range at larger metro airports...... One big jump for me was importing the stock FS9 B737-400 panel to use with the Delta Kittyhawk B737-800. This alone gained many FPS in the interior mode.Following Tweaks or adjustments applied....1. FS9 Treegen V1.0 by Feng Zhu2. Autogen discriptions spb by Matt Fox3. Reduced tree textures by Mike Kelly4. The Max terrain tree and building FSX.cfg fix by George Stoddard I set mine at 1000 and 3000.5. The display.cfg tweak for shaders on my ATI Card 6. Imported the FS9 citys to return true hi detail to the hi detail airports.... added them to the FSX addon folder and activated.Performance results...... True numbers I promise. The following tests made with all visual sliders maxed to the right including autogen and water...... No weather unlimited vis and ..... No AI of any type ... did have advanced animations and effects maxed. THe weather and AI are the only sliders not maxed out...... The visual result is stunning. Still The simulation is much smoother outside metro areas. All these FPS test with only very minimal bluring of textures, hardly noticable. These tweaks and modifications worked very well for me but as always not everyone will see the same results.Simulation run at 1600x120032 resKSEA FPS capped at 30Stock FSX B737-800End of runway Interior 13-14 Exterior 23-29takeoff roll Interior 11-13 Exterior 19-22climbout Interior 15-17 Exterior 18-2212000 ft Interior 21-24 Exterior 21-30Kittyhawk B737-800 with FS9 panelEnd of runway Interior 18-20 Exterior 21-23takeoff roll Interior 18-21 Exterior 20-21climb out Interior 21-28 Exterior 17-2212000 ft Interior 27-30 Exterior 23-30The Kittyhawk exterior PFS a little lower than the Stock FSX B737-800 due to its high quality graphics..... I assure you this is not a "a really excited user" post. I have been flying the sim with these results for the last 3 hours and the visuals are outstanding and seem to hold up without blurring. I have no reason to post bogus information. I have owned every version of Microsoft Flight Simulator since the old Sublogic days..... I can only hope that this will encourage others to keep working on their FSX programs to improve their enjoyment ... "Society has become so fake that the truth actually bothers people".

Marco. Thanks for the opportunity to bump...... Tweak number 7 that I failed to list and am listing now for anyone who wants to try these tweaks.7. Renamed the default.xml in the autogen folder to default.bak sorry for missing this in the original post. Also you may have missed the point. The tweaks that worked for me made the sim run as smoothly on my mid level machine as FS9 has for some time. I am now enjoying the additional features and visuals of FSX. The worldwide terrain mesh at the max setting is worth the price of the whole program. Takeoff from Jackson Hole KJAC in the USA with the Grand Tetons mountains in the background in full clear detail at FPS in the 30s is better than I ever saw in FS9..... Also stock FPS weather seems to have no big impact on my FPS..... Never reduced the cloud textures from the original FSX textures and they look fantastic... I will now slowly start to add in AI traffic by small increments. My only disapointment currently with FSX is the cheesy looking Green or Tan boxes that remain around secondary airports. I had hoped that this would have been addressed in FSX but it was not.We will all be comparing FSX favorably to FSXI in a few years. I just don't want anyone to give up because of poor performance. The Stock FSX B737-800 with its outstanding virtual cockpit works fine now for me. The importation of the FS9 panel was one of the first things I did to improve FPS performance and that aircraft and panel have now been parked in the hanger. Will clear off the forum for now. Probably took up too much of everyones time with lengthy posts but was too excited not to let people know that there is hope for those with mid-level computers. Thanks again to all who helped......JayDub

I do find that the fix.7 of renaming default.xml makes the sim quite unatractive IMHO as it messes up the autogen quality a bit too muchI only get buidings/houses, and drab ones at that...allen

I was going OK with this until I read no AI. You've essentially turned the new living world of FSX into the dead one of FS2000. To me, this is an unacceptable compromise.Gary

Allen, Geofa, GaryYou are right on with the default.xml file making buildings look better. I reactivated it and the sim did look better in the metro areas, however I took a monster hit on the FPS down to 12-15 when I was seeing 22-25 by removing it...... Gary I just cranked up 33 percent airline traffic and was able to keep reasonable FPS in the 21-24 range at KSLC................ with the default.xml file turned off again.......... I will have to go with no default.xml.JayDub

Marco,Very intersting that you were able to import FS9 Scenery. Would appreciate knowing what some of them are, since I have a lot of payware airports that would be great if I can move them over to FSX. I too have used many of your tips but still not there yet were I would like to be. Regards,CarlDell E510, P4-3.4g, 7600GS Pcie, 2Gram

Same here, I easily lose 10-20 fps when using default.xml on max autogen settings. I'm finding the sim pretty dang nice with "extreme density" autogen and no default.xmlAMD64, Geforce 7900GT, 1 gig DDR400

I agree. I've applied a few tweaks and I've arrived at a pretty good compromise with usable frame rates - and FSX looks stunning. Yesterday I started looking at the AI aircraft. I thought I had AI aircraft turned down, but in fact it was on maximum. I think I'll leave it there. The AI aircraft, airport service vehicles, boats and road traffic - and the occasional seagulls! - really do bring the sim to life. If only there were AI people as well. Maybe in FS11....
