Bernd:

Wonderful pictures from the West Coast...and, this DC-8 Super 70, here,...looks so sleek and long...!!

The plane reminds me a bit of the (later) A340-600 (I think, I had travelled on LH's A340-600 once...quite a stretched plane), but to think that, these (stretched) DC8s were flying nearly 20 years ahead of it...quite amazing, for their time....

Thanks for posting...!

Many thanks, P_7878. You are right about the A 340-600. It can be seen as the logical successor 🙂

Bernd: (Please excuse my digression a bit...)...

Your remark and my past travel in (LH) A340-600 made me look up a bit.....(not good news for us....🙂...please see below...)...Looks like we will eventually end up traveling only in (standard - all looking similar) two-big-engined (modern and efficient) flying machines...🙂....(no wonder, some of us, me included, like the Three-holers so much...)...

[This is from an article dated: May 26, 2020, just about a month ago...(bold text is mine...)]

  1. "Lufthansa has flown its last of 16 Airbus A340-600 aircraft to Teruel, a Spanish aircraft graveyard. The airline has flown its fleet of A340-600s to the facility for long-term storage. However, some of the planes won’t return to the skies at all."
  2. "Lufthansa’s last Airbus A340-600 due to fly to Teruel departed from Munich at 08:43 this morning. Following a 1-hour 48-minute flight, the aircraft, registered as D-AIHU, landed at the Spanish aircraft graveyard at 10:31. The plane flew through Germany, Switzerland, France, and Spain during its final journey for the foreseeable future."

etc...

So, I had happened, then, to be, once, on one of those 16 A340-600s. I recall because, in Frankfurt, LH often used to "bus" the passengers (out) to the plane, not sure, why, maybe, those "long" planes were hard to fit into the jetways, especially when the Airport is crowded with planes...(that is one long plane, for sure...see below...)...

[Bit of (max) length comparisons, from Wiki: (1) DC8-70 (187 feet) (2) A340-600 (247 feet)...]

Oh yeah, it's a sad story. The son of a good friend of mine pilots (sorry: piloted) the A340-600. The last time he flew her long haul was in April, when he went to Shanghai to pick up medical supplies (face masks etc), which got strapped to the seats. Must have been a truly strange sight to the crew 😉

Btw, LH still operates 6 MD 11s as freighters. All of them will be phased out this year too and replaced by 777Fs. Ok, we both know that running an airline is a business, and it needs to be profitable. But luckily we can see it from a more emotional side and can continue to fly our 707, 727, L1011 etc etc 😄😄

Hopefully to be snapped up by UPS, FedEx, Sky Lease or Western Global...  (I think those are the only other operators currently..
