July 8, 20205 yr I have fixed and fudged and worked with this file for three days and I can't get it to work with my GNS530 V2 in the Real Air Legacy in P3D v4.5. It always freezes the sim when I hit ENTER when it flashes CHECKLIST OK. It is named "checklist.GNS" and resides in the Simobjects/Airplane/Real Air Legacy V2 folder. I tried to adapt the format from the TEST checklist but I must have missed something. Could someone take a look and see what I've done wrong? # Reality XP GNS V2 Checklist File # RealAir Lancair Legacy CHECKLIST # # Format Description: # - Checklist files are treated as encoded in ASCII. # - Comments start with the hash character, #, and extend to the end of the line. # - Each line represents a checklist entry or a checklist item (up to 16 characters). # - Entries start at the beginning of the line (up to 9 entries per file). # - Items are idented with tab or spaces(s) (up to 30 items per entry) #REALITY XP GNS 2 Settings CHK PRE-FLIGHT Parking Brake SET Switches OFF Lndg Gr DOWN Battery ON VM1000C MONITOR Fuel Quantity A/R Annunciators TEST Trim Tabs NEUTRAL Altimeter SET BEFORE STARTING Canopy CLSD/LOCKD Fuel Selector BOTH Beacon ON ENGINE START Boost Pump ON Throttle 1/4 inch OPEN Prop FULL FRWRD Mixture RICH Starter Switch START, release Starter Switch BOTH Boost Pump OFF AFTER START Alternator Switch ON Oil Pressure RISING Volts & Amps CHECK Lights A/R Engine WITHIN LIMITS Avionics Master ON Avionics ON & SET Warm up @ 1000-1200RPM TAXI Parking Brake RELEASE Brakes CHECK Instruments CHECK ENGINE RUNUP Parking Brake SET Throttle 1500 RPM Prop CHECK Magnetos CHECK Engine WITHIN LIMITS Throttle IDLE Trim SET for T/O Parking Brake RELEASE BEFORE TAKEOFF Autopilot OFF Prop FULL FORWARD Mixture RICH Canopy CLSD & LOCK Harness TIGHT Flaps TWO NOTCHES Trim 33% T/O Power SET Brakes RELEASE Max T/O Pwr 29.7"@ 2700 Engine gauges in GREEN Rotate@ 65-75 knots Gear UP Flaps UP INITIAL CLIMB Throttle 24-27" Rpm A/R Mixture LEAN A/R CRUISE Power Setting 24X24 Mixture LEAN for alt Battery Condition CHECK Fuel flow 13.5 GPH DESCENT Altimeter SET Power A/R Spoilers A/R INITIAL APPROACH Harness FASTENED Lndg Lights ON Boost Pump ON Prop FULL FORWARD Mixture RICH <132kt Gear EXTEND THREE GREENS <122kt Flaps DOWN FINAL APPROACH Flaps FULL Pattern 90-100 knots Throttle 12-15" Descent rate 500-600 fpm Threshold 85 knots AFTER LANDING Lights A/R Flaps UP Trim ZERO Radio GROUND SHUT DOWN Prkng Brake SET Battery CHECK Avionics OFF Throttle IDLE All Switches OFF Mixture IDLE CUT OFF Starter Switch OFF Battery OFF Gust Locks ON
July 9, 20205 yr Author I would if I could attach a file to this thread. I don't have a dropbox account.
July 10, 20205 yr Can you at least try the same file with only the first section, then with the first 2 sections and so on, until it fails? This will help pin point the problem. Please note the file header comments: it is interpreted as ANSI text and you might want to cross check there is no Unicode character inserted somewhere in the file which might cause this?
July 13, 20205 yr Author Thanks for the help. Is there a list of Unicode characters that might be unacceptable? I have done as you have suggested and slowly rebuilt the checklist.gns category by category until it failed. I have removed suspected spurious characters such as "@" and "%". The file below worked until I added "DESCENT" and "Altimeter SET". Is there a maximum number of entries that I have exceeded that could cause the file to crash the program? # Reality XP GNS V2 Checklist File # RealAir Lancair Legacy CHECKLIST # # Format Description: # - Checklist files are treated as encoded in ASCII. # - Comments start with the hash character, #, and extend to the end of the line. # - Each line represents a checklist entry or a checklist item (up to 16 characters). # - Entries start at the beginning of the line (up to 9 entries per file). # - Items are idented with tab or spaces(s) (up to 30 items per entry) #REALITY XP GNS 2 Settings CHK PRE-FLIGHT Prkng Brake SET Switches OFF Lndg Gr DOWN Battery ON VM1000C MONITOR Fuel CHECK Annunciator TEST Trim NEUTRAL Altimeter SET BEFORE STARTING Canopy CLSD/LOCKD Fuel Selector BOTH Beacon ON ENGINE START Boost Pump ON Throttle 1/4" OPEN Prop FULL FRWRD Mixture RICH START BOTH Boost Pump OFF AFTER START Alternator ON Oil Press RISING Electrical CHECK Lights A/R Engine GREEN Avionics Mstr ON Avionics SET Wrm Up 1000-1200rpm TAXI Prkgn Brake RELEASE Brakes CHECK Instruments CHECK ENGINE RUNUP Prkng Brake SET 1500rpm Prop CHECK Magnetos CHECK Engine in GREEN Throttle IDLE Trim SET for T/O Prkng Brake OFF BEFORE TAKEOFF Autopilot OFF Prop FULL FRWRD Mixture RICH Canopy CLSD/LOCKD Harness TIGHT Flaps 2 NOTCHES Trim 1/3 T/O Power SET Brakes RELEASE Max T/O Pwr 29.7mp Engine in GREEN Vr 65-75 knots Gear UP Flaps UP INITIAL CLIMB Throttle 24-27mp Rpm A/R Mixture LEAN A/R CRUISE Pwr Setting 24sq Mixture LEAN Battery CHECK Fuel flow A/RDESCENT Altimeter SET

In this case, I've just noticed you've added a # (comment symbol) right in front of "REALITY XP GNS 2" line. In doing so, the rest of the text in the following line, " Settings CHK" creates an item for an unlabelled entry. Adding the "DESCENT" entry makes it the 10th. The crash is most likely a combination of our product checklist parser not robust enough with the missing unlabelled entry and the GNS not capable of dealing with such unlabelled entries either.
July 13, 20205 yr Author Jean-Luc, I misunderstood the file header comment. Is that a Garmin programming limitation or a Reality XP limitation? You seem to suggest it is both. I removed the # in front of the "REALITY XP GNS 2" line and it crashed the program at the same point so that was not the problem. However if you remove the # front of the "REALITY XP GNS 2" it counts as one of the 9 file header items so actually you waste a checklist category by doing so. I also found that by numbering the categories in the order a pilot uses them, they appear in order in the GPS. Otherwise they appear in alphabetized order. Okay I think I'm getting the hang of it. I have a viable 9 "file header" checklist. Do you think it would be helpful to create a sticky for forum user created aircraft specific checklists like we have for panel configs? The individual user could just modify these files to suit them personally but the hard work would already be done. Edited July 13, 20205 yr by mslim

July 14, 20205 yr Author Yes I just found the link you quoted yesterday. Reading the supplied notes on the download I assumed it would not work with a GNS530. I would be delighted to use it if it works.
July 14, 20205 yr @fppilot this is the ACE tool for the GTN only. We've supplemented the GNS trainer with the capability to import checklists. These are just ASCII text files with simple formatting and some limitations, solely respecting the GNS own limitations: # Format Description: # - Checklist files are treated as encoded in ASCII. # - Comments start with the hash character, #, and extend to the end of the line. # - Each line represents a checklist entry or a checklist item (up to 16 characters). # - Entries start at the beginning of the line (up to 9 entries per file). # - Items are idented with tab or spaces(s) (up to 30 items per entry) @mslim The import feature is custom RXP implementation but the limitations are those internal to the GNS checklist system. As for the suggestion this is a good idea I think, we do have one already in the GTN forum: Just post a new message pretty much along the same line as when posting a panel mod and I'll make it the starting point of the official discussion!
