You’d be surprised though, one of the requirements under EASA for approved training organisations to teach and examine for type ratings is the use of an approved training device in a class room to run over procedures and briefings,we indeed had one of those ... it was a flight deck poster hanging on the wall. Seriously it was classed as an approved training device. Funny to read those last sentence John because it sounds so familiar, my son has also several different type ratings and with maintaining his currency (unfortunately not the 747 anymore, because those are retired) when starting his career they preferred a flight deck poster and in MCC... Not even close to use his father desktop sim not even now... Now they have enough legs so it's lucky not an issue and I hope for the whole industry soon also. André

To the OP’s and @Zcloudman FS2020 will be a good sim , but as has ever been The case a default version of a complex airliner won’t be....complex, nothing will change now. Hopefully you are vr flying the PMDG 747-400 (and also the real one, despite the last few months). Justflight will be releasing a 747 classic some time soon, which i think would be fub in VR. I’ve VR flown all the PMDG, the FSL and the Toliss. The Toliss, 737, 747 and 777 all work well. If you’re looking for a great VR airliner - and haven’t tried it yet - do yourself a favour and get the Maddog. Even if you’re a boeing guy, its interesting to see how MD design a plane, and it is just a great VR flier. As for your comments on sim training - i’ve done a lot of work in the field of simulation in other industries, and it’s amazing how you can get good outcomes out of some pretty low-fidelity gear if you use it right. Rob I have a weak spot for the PMDG 747 😍... How is VR nowadays I skipped it due to motion sickness from it (but that's my personal flaw lol) and quality versus performance, but I guess when it works it 's great to be in 3d space? André

VR is great with a decent computer. I use p3d v5 now, but before the v5 release i was on x-plane vulkan. i’ve been VR exclusively for 4 years now,. Rift S is the beginner HMD of choice. Have a home cockpit (prosim 737), but don’t use it much due to VR. My suggestion: get a Rift S, start with short sessions and steadily work on your VR legs. Stop when nauseous. Blow a desk fan in your face when starting. Set sim up with sliders and addons to get a steady 40 FPS. Motion sickness is very common with new users, but commit yourself to VR and there’s a very good chance you’ll be able to work past it. I got quite a bit when i started, now i can go hours without any ill effects. Thanks for sharing appreciated , and to add hardware I9-9900k with RTX 2080 and 32 Gb and several m2 drives is similar to yours, with the exception of the TI and the extra VRAM? 🙂 Edited July 20, 20205 yr by awf André

I am a huge fan if this type if simming, so always happy to talk about it. Cheers! I had the same issue and I was VERY UPSET I couldn't even stay in for 5 minutes due to instant nausea and dizziness. I ended up taking Dramamine about 1/2 hour before I go in and IT WORKS!! It works VERY GOOD and I would not do it without it unless I am playing something like beat saber or the viewpoint is not a character moving around. I was SO HAPPY though that I could finally use Prepar3d with FlyInside VR and it is DEFINITELY the way to go. I agree with Robs responses and I use a Rift-S which works great and also had the original Rift which is packed away. Nowadays, I am just waiting for MSFS to release and I am also an alpha tester so I can't say anything about it but VR is on the wish list of course as we all know. Dramamine even has info on their website about VR sickness: https://www.dramamine.com/blog/vr-gaming-making-you-sick-use-these-5-tips-to-keep-playing I recommend everyone get a VR headset because it is one of the coolest technologies I've ever had. Yes I do take the PMDG 747 up for a spin in VR , it's nothing short of breathtaking. They've done such a good job on the flight model the pitch and power settings are all spot on and in VR its almost identical to sitting in the real aircraft, I find myself trying to rest my arm on the coaming like I do in real life its that convincing. Unfortunately when I fly the PMDG 744 now it's with a heavy heart as my real world 744 has been unceremoniously retired during this crisis so I don't think I'll ever get to fly her again, PMDG will keep those memories alive for me though. It's looking like I'll possibly be flying the 787 going forward so I've been flying the QW 787 in VR. I'm sat on the ramp familiarizing myself with its layout and also doing a lot of visual circuits getting used to the HUD. No amount of looking at a poster or manual will be as beneficial as using the HUD in a VR environment, the VR also captures the feeling of the last 50ft of landing a heavy jet in a way a monitor just cant manage. In addition I've been keeping my raw flying skills up by flying the Milviz T-38 around the circuit in P3D because of it's amazing flight model, if it's good enough to keep shuttle pilots current it'll do for me ! Also the JF hawk and X-trident tornado low level around Orbx TE UK, in XP all in VR of course. I'm using Edwards KEDW to do my circuit work, (Orbx socal region) it's just you the aircraft and the runway to concentrate on, no distracting ground object scenery just desert. Now, I don't know if its the exceptional frame rates that this baron area gives me, in excess of 150fps, or its the lack of peripheral ground objects to distract me but I'm finding I'm not getting the usual VR nausea here at all, it may be somewhere to try flying if your new to VR to get used to it. 787 captain.
