August 30, 20205 yr Author Hooray, success! I ended up buying a new PSU out of an abundance of caution/paranoia. I hate spending the extra money but the peace of mind was worth it. Between that, a new motherboard and new case I now have a functioning, upgraded computer. Thanks to everyone for their help and responses figuring this out. The amount of knowledgeable, helpful people on avsim never ceases to amaze me. As an aside, the fractal case i bought was a joy to work with, so much space and good cable management opportunities compared to the first case I bought. I highly recommend it. Now to go see what this i9 10900k is all about!
