Does it matter what your server settings are when on vatsim?

I understand live weather will be best to fly on vatsim to get appropriate and same weather between you and the controller but what about traffic and group settings?

This is one area where I've spent considerable time, research, testing and comparative analysis.

As things are, it is impossible for everyone on the network to have the same weather, but setting "VATSIM Weather" in one's weather engine can help (it's not even close to 100% though).  The only way to achieve this is use all new network software, which is what POSCON has done.

Best wishes.

Thanks for your reply. Could you shed more light on why it is impossible to have everyone in the same area to have the same weather, and also what you mean with the comment about weather engine. I wasnt aware that active sky etc was compatible or even necessary with the great default weather engine?

Different weather engines handle weather downloads (including sources), well, differently, sometimes it's different based upon where the end user lives.  I've seen people I'm sharing an aircraft with have far different weather than I do even when the same exact weather engine, settings and sources are used.  The only difference was where the two people lived even though they were sharing an aircraft at the same location in the world.  Additionally, some weather engines correlate, process and inject weather data far differently than others.

Are you sure you're talking about MSFS? As far as I know, none of that is currently possible (yet).

For some reason I keep hearing echos of the words "can of worms" in the background.

For flying on VATSIM then different sims and weather engines are going to be different, but the amount of difference is highly variable.  The sim won't matter unless everyone is using the same sim, which I can promise you they will not, especially at the start.  I have MSFS and I'm flying P3Dv4/v5 because of the type of flying I do and MSFS isn't ready for that.  My graphics, which not quite at the MSFS level are rather impressive but I use all ORBX and other payware airports.  As I've been saying, it's going to take a while for MSFS to mature into the type of sim that will fill the needs of guys like me, but that doesn't mean I won't support it right away.

If any FSX/P3D users have flown with Xplane users on VATSIM, you'd join me in wanting to strangle each and every one of those guys.  Now hold on, I love Austin and his people are some of the best I've known in all of flight sim - just LOVE those guys and gals!  In fact, Austin bought us all a 5-Star dinner in Orlando last year (wonderful guy) and he couldn't make it as weather turned his private aircraft around.  But all that doesn't change all the, shall we call them "infarctions" that VATSIM users have had to contend with when an Xplaner joins the fray... my God!  Of course those poor guys are oblivious to it all so what do they care of they ruin the immersion for everyone else... LOL!    And the weather is one of the absoltute worst parts of this.... I've long fantasized about traveling to the home of Xplane users which roar into a STAR or Class B and cause me to get vector ed all over hell and creation and box their ears until they agree to stop doing that!  It's almost as bad as the VATSIM users who maintain the same damned IAS from 35,000ft aqll the way to when they start their approach - they have no concept of ground speed or the fact that they screw a long line of traffic behind them because they can't flaming fly correctly.

Now, I'm sorry, but the last 2 events I flew on the network had an over abundance of people like I described above and well, you asked.... LOL.. Of course i mean most of this tongue and cheeck, it's only more funnier because it's true!

Dave, thank you for your insight, but my focus here in this part of the forum is of course MSFS. I'm not sure how much of your answers really relate to MSFS? I was asking about the various group and server related settings in MSFS when flying on vatsim. IE, I wonder if you fly on own group where you usually cannot see other players except your friends, will you still be able to see other vatsim traffic when on that setting?

That's what I'm saying.... you might be using MSFS on VATSIM, but others will be using other sims - so it's going to be different.  How different depends on which sims and which weather engines are in use.  Can't look at it as one person, one sim, or one weather engine.

Are there any plans on how to deal with the generic taxiways in MSFS? I would assume this could be problematic, when someone uses MSFS default autogen airports and the taxiway designations are completely different from the ones on the actual charts.

Great question, as was the question about weather.

There really isn't anything to be done with this when people are using different sims, different scenery and difference geo referenced points.  We've long had this issue because of those things and we'll simply have to deal with it even after MSFS matures and we have people using default and payware scenery.

From my time back as a student controller on vatsim many years ago, these things were issues we talked about and were prepared for. I guess the vatsim controllers are busy prepping for just these issues.
