Some new texture conversion batch files

Featured Replies

Not sure if this is in response to my question, but do the Texture scenery/global/texture and scenery/world/texture directories get reduced in size - one is 228 megs, one 558, and one is 4.6 gig from what i rememebr and they stay the same after running all the 50% batch files. I thought all those hundreds of texture files get reduced in file size, so the directories should get reduced by 50% in size too ? What am I missing ???

It sounds like something is not working correctly. They should definately be reduced in size by about 75%.Can you see if there are any error messages when the bat files are running? I know it's hard to see, I'm not sure if there is a way to pause it.Matt

Thank you for the confirmation. I did notice an error at some point in time with "file not found" as part of the statement, but since the batch kept running and the files did appear and then disapper in the Texturetemp dir, I assumed that all was fine. I did follow the directions as per you post at http://www.fox-fam.com/wordpress/?page_id=41. I'll try to see about that error.

Actually here's more of a general question. I've been waiting for a flight sim like this for decades now and it seems that it is finally here. Too bad I can't afford to just go out and spend 3 k on a new top of the line system with Intel's latest duo core offering, 4 gig of DDR2, and at least two latest nVidias running in SLI mode to enjoy what's on the advertised screenshots.Realistically speaking, how much can I expect with these tweaks with 2.8 Ghz P4, 1 Gig PC3200 DDR and 512 Mb DDR2 BFG nVidia GeForce 7600 GS OverClocked ???I've been reading about these tweaks even before I got the FSX. I even bought the 2004 FS to see if that's gonna please my demanding expectations of high graphics detail in a flight sim. Unfortunately, 2004, is nowhere near FSX, at least to me.

Unfortunately, 2004, is nowhere near FSX, at least to>me.You've got a very similar system as myself. Only difference is I have 3.0 GHZ P4. For now, I've decided to use FSX only for slow and low GA flying and still use FS2004 for when I want to do a flight in a 737 or other jet. Doesn't matter what I do, my computer cannot process the ground textures fast enough when I get over 250 knots. From my experience, the texture bat files may get you 10-15% boost in frame rates. They will also help a little with the time it takes to load the sim and reduce hard drive activity while your flying and seem to help a little bit with the blurries. Higher end systems will probably see less of a difference and lower systems more. My main reason for providing these is because I wanted to try reducing textures and I figured other people would also. Definatly meant for advanced tweakers. Only way to find out for sure is to try them. It's easy enough to go back, just make sure to backup your original textures. In the end, I decided against using the texture reduction files because they aren't really necessary for me as long as I'm flying slow. The other tweaks out there that reduce autogen make the biggest difference by far.Matt

A picture is worth thousand words. With the autogen tweaks, is this even possible on my system ??? Flying from JFK into Manhattan is a far cry fromhttp://www.avsim.com/pages/0106/FSX/fsx_thumbs.htmlIt realize that these tweaks are extremely system-dependent, but since we're so close in the system specs, maybe I should start with the tweaks you have implemented on yours and take it from there. Would you mind sharing that here ???

Thanks for the reply.I did all that. My fsx.CFG does not contain [TERRAIN] section - so I created it manually by adding these lines to the end of the cfg fileTERRAIN_MAX_AUTOGEN_TREES_PER_CELL=4500TERRAIN_MAX_AUTOGEN_BUILDINGS_PER_CELL=3000Couldn't find TEXTURE_BANDWIDTH_MULT=400 either so I added it to the end of the file as well along with [bufferPools]PoolSize=5000000The sim works, so I suppose it is ok to do this, and I suppose the order does not matter either ???How's this:I flew from JFK over manhattan and it was amazing to see traffic moving and terrain resemble Google Earth or satellite maps, but when i tried the same in my hometown - Ottawa, Canada - all I got was nice trees, occasional farm bldgs (I assume the courtesy of autogen), but the city was gone ! No downtown, no suburbs.Does this mean that not all cities are mapped ???

I meant My fsx.CFG does not contain [TERRAIN] section.and[bufferPools]PoolSize=5000000

I guess square brackets are forbidden ???I meant I did not forget BufferPools and TERRAIN, but could not addTERRAIN_MAX_AUTOGEN_TREES_PER_CELL=4500TERRAIN_MAX_AUTOGEN_BUILDINGS_PER_CELL=3000under TERRAIN section as the other mod lines would end up under TERRAIN section. I suppose it does not matter though.

OK - sorry for this spam. I should've searched the forum first. Looks like plenty of world wide texture is not mapped at all. If the Capital of Canada does not exist - I think I can forget about flying over Nazca planes of Peru ???

To Matt:Re: Batch FilesWhy some contain del command as the last step and some only finish with move ???

If the original fiile is a BMP then it can just be moved. If the original file is a DDS then there is an extra BMP file created during the conversion process that has to be deleted because a DDS file is also created and moved.Matt

Thanks - it finally all worked, but I did not notice any performance improvements. Anu idea why TEXTURE_BANDWIDTH_MULT=40 gets reset to 40 everytime i try to set it to 400 ???

Bump for tips
